People s Republic of China is not a major trading nation by international standards. The total trade of the United States is about 15 times that of China, and it was only in 1973 that the level of the mainland part of China s foreign trade surpassed that of Taiwan. Also, China s total international trade is a relatively low percentage of its gross national product—about six percent. Yet this is not surprising for a major country that has a massive population, a large domestic market and low per capita income. 

China is an increasingly competitive market. Out of China s total economic activity, only about six percent is devoted to foreign trade. To become part of that small percentage requires the utmost patience, tact and skill.

The Chinese chemical market is attracting huge foreign direct investments. Between 1993 and 2003, investment projects amounted to around EUR 20 billion of contractual FDI, with Bayer, BASF, Shell, and BP the four biggest investors. Over the last ten years, five percent of foreign direct investment was into the chemicals sector. Multinational corporations (MNCs) tend to enter via joint ventures partially driven by the need for feedstock access, but wholly foreign-owned enterprises will become more common following China s membership of the WTO. 

Clinical studies in China may only be carried out after an application with supporting data, partly equivalent to those for a marketing authorization in many other countries, and are approved by the Bureau of Drug Policy and Administration, Ministry of Public Health. The application must be in accordance with the provisions of the Rules Governing the Approval of Clinical Trial of Foreign Drugs, and the studies must be conducted in compliance with these rules. 

China is forging ahead in the chemical business, and as soon as the economic situation in the Far East settles, there should be a lucrative market for foreign investors well into the early 2000s.
