Child, Thomas

Historians have wondered for many years whether Thomas Jefferson fathered a child by Sally Hennings. DNAfingerprinting evidence obtained in 1998 is inconclusive but strongly suggestive. [Pg.1119]

Many eminent persons have had children with serious mental problems and have had at least one child take his or her life. Robert Frost s daughter was committed to the state mental hospital and another daughter had a nervous breakdown. One of Albert Einstein s children was diagnosed as schizophrenic. Ambrose Bierce s oldest son committed suicide, and his other died of alcoholism at age 27. Thomas Edison had two children who became alcoholics, one of whom committed suicide. Alfred Stieglitz s daughter was psychotic and committed to a mental institution. James Joyce had two children. His son became an alcoholic his daughter went mad and, as discussed, was admitted to an asylum for schizophrenia. Numerous other examples demonstrate the frequent problems of geniuses children. Many of these children tried unsuccessfully to pursue careers similar to their eminent parents, but it is not clear if this played any role in their mental problems. [Pg.134]

The mission of St. Jude Children s Research Hospital is to advance cures, and means of prevention, for pediatric catastrophic diseases through research and treatment. The first American paint factory was opened in Boston in 1737 by Thomas Childs (2). The pigment and oil were placed on a granite trough, and a granite ball, known as the Boston Stone, was then rolled over the mixture to make the paint. The ball is now preserved and serves as the symbol for the Federation of Societies for Paint Technology. [Pg.3285]

On great woman , see 2.1.115 ( great with child ), and cf. Webster, The White Devil Because your brother is the corpulent Duke, / -That is the great Duke (2.1.180-1). The OED does not cite instances of mummy meaning mother until 1768, but it does quote examples of mum in this sense as early as 1595 (noun 2a) other early modern texts also suggest the possibility of a pun here see Thomas Middleton, A Game at Chess To three old mummy-matrons I have promised / The mothership o the maids (4.2.44-5) and John Donne, Love s Alchemy (about which this possibility has repeatedly been raised) Hope not for mind in women, at their best / Sweetness and wit, they are but mummy, possessed (23-4). For milk , see Ferdinand earlier in this play (2.5.48). [Pg.247]

The duty of care extends to after-school activities and clubs, off-site activities including schools trips and residential activities (see Thomas, Chapter 8) when they are engaged in authorised school activities elsewhere (DFE/TPCD, 1995, 35.7) and may be 24 hours a day throughout an entire journey. The duty can only be put aside when responsibility is reasonably delegated to others. Additionally, a teacher owes a duty of care where a child is allowed out of school before the end of the day. In the case of Barnes v. Hampshire County Council (1969) it was held that the teacher and the LEA were liable as the child was allowed out of school before her mother arrived and was subsequently injured. The judge considered that an accident of this type was foreseeable, as the teacher knew the time the crossing patrol was available. This reminds us of teachers responsibility for the welfare, upbringing and education of the pupils in their care, in particular, of the need to be constantly mindful for the pupils health and safety. [Pg.9]
