A multi-microsensor array of potentiometric MIP chemosensors has been devised for determination of a serotonin neurotransmitter [180]. In the toluene porogenic solvent solution, the MAA functional monomer and the EGDMA cross-linker were polymerized in the presence of the serotonin hydrochloride template (Table 6). Subsequently, the resulting MIPs were immobilized on a plasma polymer layer by swelling and polymerization. Plasma polymerization was performed using styrene or ethylbenzene as the monomer. The chemosensor fabricated that way was appreciably responsive to serotonin while selectivity to serotonin analogues, like acetaminophen... [Pg.245]

Thus, synthetic combinatorial receptor libraries of high diversity are a prerequisite for further progress in the field of chemosensors. As yet, there are no specific receptors available for most of the analytes, but this can be overcome by the use of sensor arrays. A mathematical analysis by pattern recognition can lead to a successful analysis of compound mixtures which are exposed to an array of sensors with different selectivities ( bio-electronic nose ) [13,14]. [Pg.336]

These chemosensors represent the simplest of gas sensors in that their chemical reactivity is directly transduced into an electrical signal. Changes in resistance, capacitance, voltage, or current indicate the presence of a particular analyte. These types of sensors are widely used for gas and odor measurements in commercial e-nose sensor arrays. [Pg.144]

Aromas and odors are mixture of different classes of chemical species often found in foods, beverages, and medicines. It is difficult to use a single chemosensor to discriminate these analytes. Sensor arrays, in which different sensor elements are used with data analysis, and subsequent pattern recognition will make it possible to characterize gas mixtnres quantitatively or odors qualitatively. Sensors that incorporate pattern recognition software are usually referred to as electronic noses [74]. Recently, there has been much interest in the composition of the suites of organic vapors emitted by food products. [Pg.86]
