This venerable book was written in 1935, shortly after the birth of modern quantum mechanics. Nevertheless, it remains one of the best sources for students seeking to gain an understanding of quantum-mechanical principles that are relevant in chemistry and chemical physics. Equally outstanding jobs are done in dealing with both quantitative and qualitative aspects of the subject. More accessible to most chemists than Landau and Lifschitz.

Babko for his expertise in analytical chemistry and in the chemistry of complex compounds. Tlie current conference is organised by Analytical Scientific Council at Academy of Sciences of Ukraine under collaboration with European Association for Chemical and Molecular Sciences (EuClicMS) and sponsored by Intemational Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (lUPAC) and by the Intemational Association for the Promotion of Co-operation with Scientists from the New Independent States of the Eormer Soviet Union (INTAS). 

In October, 2005 the Ukrainian scientific community will celebrate the centenary of the birth of the outstanding Ukrainian scientist, Anatoly K. Babko for his expertise in analytical chemistry and in the chemistry of complex compounds. 

As a result, we could open the door to a new frontier in indole chemistry. Various 1-hydroxyindoles (4a), l-hydroxytryptophans(la), 1-hydroxytryptamines (lb), and their derivatives have been given birth for the first time. As predicted, 1-hydroxytryptophan and 1-hydroxytryptamine derivatives are found to undergo previously unknown nucleophilic substitution reactions. In addition, we have been uncovering many interesting reactivities characteristic of 1-hydroxyindole structures. From the synthetic point of view, useful building blocks for indole alkaloids, hither to inaccessible by the well-known electrophilic reactions in indole chemistry, have now become readily available. Many biologically interesting compounds have been prepared as well. 

Catalytic, enantioselective cyclopropanation enjoys the unique distinction of being the first example of asymmetric catalysis with a transition metal complex. The landmark 1966 report by Nozaki et al. [1] of decomposition of ethyl diazoacetate 3 with a chiral copper (II) salicylamine complex 1 (Scheme 3.1) in the presence of styrene gave birth to a field of endeavor which still today represents one of the major enterprises in chemistry. In view of the enormous growth in the field of asymmetric catalysis over the past four decades, it is somewhat ironic that significant advances in cyclopropanation have only emerged in the past ten years. 

The result was of course Volume 2 and the birth of a series. The next volume, 3, was produced at the time we again felt the need to update our narrative a semidecenial period was settled upon since it seemed to represent the best compromise between currency and a sufficient body of material to merit treatment in a monograph. The volume at hand continues the series it covers the chemistry of those compounds which have been granted a United States Adopted Name (USAN) in the five years between 1983 and 1987. The bulk of the references thus fall in the 1980s the reader will note occasional much older references. We suppose that those represent compounds which were synthesized many years ago and set on the shelf at that time they were then revived for clinical development for one reason or another and a USAN applied for.

However, a certain discrepancy remains in the way NMR is understood, which can be explained by the various points of view that are assumed by different people. The year 1945 did not merely represent the birth of a new method for understanding the properties of matter nor did it see the birth of an entirely new branch of science, although some may prefer to view it that way. Although NMR is based on fundamental aspects of physics and chemistry, the principles of which were mostly understood and described in seminal works during the first two decades of the lifetime of NMR, during this time, NMR has developed a whole toolbox of methods that can deal with almost any question arising in the context of structure and the dynamics of matter.

Frankland s birth may have prevented him from attaining the highest professional honors. Frankland practically founded the Institute of Chemistry, the world s first professional association for scientists, but tellingly, he never became president of the prestigious Royal Society. Even Frankland s close friend Huxley wrote dismissively, Frankland won t do. ...

It is of note that the arrival of Mark into the Du Pont sphere of influence coincided with the emergence of a midwestern bred and trained chemist, Wallace H. Carothers, as director of Du Pont s polymer research. The work associated with Mark and Carothers signaled the break from the empirical practice of polymer chemistry and the birth of the science of polymers. Carothers directed the research group which on October 27, 1938 publicly announced the synthesis of a synthetic polymer which, for the first time in history, had properties superior to natural fibers. The polymer was nylon. 

The birth of a crystal and its growth provide an impressive example of nature s selectivity. In qualitative analytical chemistry inorganic solutes are distinguished from each other by a separation scheme based on the selectivity of precipitation reactions. In natural waters certain minerals are being dissolved, while others are being formed. Under suitable conditions a cluster of ions or molecules selects from a great variety of species the appropriate constituents required to form particular crystals.
