The isoquinoline alkaloids (1-4) along with the indole alkaloids are the most abundant groups of alkaloids. Their chemistry and synthesis have been extensively studied. In recent years one of the most interesting features of the chemistry of these alkaloids is the transformation among the different types.

This chapter is meant to be an overview of ongoing studies of polysiloxane-modified epoxy resins. Because this research area is still quite young, it is not yet possible to write a standard review article. Presented here is the current status of a collaborative effort encompassing chemistry and synthesis of the modified networks, their morphology, their mechanical properties, and their friction and wear behavior. The earliest work in the synthesis and characterization of siloxane-modified networks was done by Riffle et al. 15). More recent research in the area of chemistry and synthesis has been carried out by Tran 17).

Suzuki et al. (14) have shown that upon variation of the gel composition as many as five different zeolite structures (ZSM-5, ZSM-35, ZSM-39, ZSM-48 and KZ-1) can be synthesized in the presence of pyrrolidine (14). Hence, not only the nature of the organic template but also tFie gel chemistry and synthesis conditions have a marked influence on the structure of the crystalline product. In a recent systematic study it was pointed out that especially pH and Na+-content have to be carefully adjusted in order to avoid the formation of phases other than ZSM-23 (4).
