To get the best estimate, each job should be broken down into its components and separate indices used for labour and materials. It is often more convenient to use the composite indices published for various industries in the trade journals. These produce a weighted average index combining the various components in proportions considered typical for the particular industry. However, the values reported in such sources will be subject to short-term fluctuations, and long-term forecasts will be required for investment analysis. 

Much information on chemicals, equipment, etc. can be obtained from the various trade journals and newspapers such as Chemical Marketing Reporter. Many companies sell used tabletting machines (e.g., Union Std. Equip. Co. in New York and Chicago and Chemical and Process Mach. Corp. in New York). 

CA now systematically covers more than 9000 journals. We are sometimes asked what determines whether or not a journal is covered. The answer is that a journal is regularly examined as soon as it is discovered that at least occasionally it contains new information of chemical interest. Coverage, of course, does not mean abstracting all papers in a journal. As a matter of fact, CA abstracts all papers of only a comparatively small percentage of the journals in the List of Periodicals Abstracted by Chemical Abstracts (those devoted strictly to original papers in the field of chemistry). Significance of Titles. The name or title of a periodical publication is indicative of its sponsor. Zhurnal is reserved for regular periodicals published by the USSR Academy and the Ukrainian Academy. Doklady and Vestnik are used for the main publications of the various academies Izvestiya is used for publications of academy departments. Institute publications of academies and industrial bodies are called Trudy. Uchenye Zapiski, Nauchnye Zapiski, and Nauchnyi Byulleten are used for university publications. The titles of trade journals are highly specific —Ugol (Coal), Stal (Steel), Khimicheskaya Promyshlennost (Chemical Industry), Spirtovaya Promyshlennosf (Alcohol Industry), Tsement (Cement), Steklo i Keramika (Glass and Ceramics), and so on.

In some fields the trade journals prepare and publish abstracts of pertinent information within the field including a certain amount of technical trade literature. At least one specialized abstracting service (the Summary of Current Literature a British publication devoted to the subjects of rubber and related fields including plastics) includes abstracts of appropriate technical data or information appearing in advertisements. The Industrial Arts Index and Chemical Abstracts will frequently report data appearing in trade journals and similar types of publications.
