Among the major governmental research centers, particular mention should be made of the following. The National Chemical Laboratory (NCL) at Poona is charged with the development of methods for the manufacture of a large number of chemicals, materials, and devices. Similarly, the Indian Institute of Petroleum at Dehra Dun, the Central Fuel Research Institute of Dhanbad, the Central Salt and Marine Chemicals Research Institute at Bhatnagar, and the region research laboratories at Hyderabad, Jorhat, and Jamma provide support for development of the chemical industry. Professor Nobuyuki Harada obtained his B.Sc., M.Sc., and Ph.D. degrees from Tohoku University in 1965, 1967, and 1970, respectively. In 1970 he joined the Chemical Research Institute of Nonaqueous Solutions, Tohoku University as research associate. After postdoctoral studies at the Department of Chemistry, Columbia University, U.S.A. (1973-75) he was promoted as associate professor at the Chemical Research Institute of Nonaqueous Solutions, Tohoku University. Dr. Franco Cataldo is adjunct professor of chemistry at the Tor Vergata University of Rome, Italy. He is also the R D manager in some private research organizations, including the Soc. Lupi Chemical Research Institute. Dr. Cataldo s research interests are mainly focused on elemental carbon chemistry with special emphasis on polyynes and fullerene chemistry other fields of interest are macromolecular chemistry and biochemistry, as well as astrochemistry.
