All this means is that new branches such as biochemistry, photochemistry, and electrochemistry have to be incorporated into chemical engineering training programs so that the present fields of knowledge will have to be condensed by about one-third. As a consequence there again will be a change in the aims and therefore also in the entire concept of chemical engineering. 

The chemical industry has also become more global. At one time, chemicals and products from chemicals for the entire world were manufactured in the centers of the chemical industry the United States and Western Europe. This meant that a large, rapidly growing chemical industry in the United States and Western Europe was needed to serve the needs of developing countries. Now chemicals are manufactured all over the world, closer to where they are used, as are the raw materials for these chemicals. Therefore, the traditional commodity chemical industry is not in a growth phase in places such as the United States and Western Europe. Existing chemical processes continue to operate, and chemical engineers trained to understand and work with continuous, commodity chemical processes are still needed. 

Include important accidents of the past in the training of young graduates and company employees. Suitable training material is available from the American Institute of Chemical Engineers and the U.K. Institution of Chemical Engineers (Crowl and Louvar, Chemical Process Safety Fundamentals and Applications, Prentice Hall, 1990).

It is not sufficient to issue instructions about (1) and the aid described in (2). We must convince all concerned, particularly foremen, that they should not carry out unauthorized modifications. This can be done by discussing typical incidents, such as those described here those illustrated in the Institution of Chemical Engineers (UK) Safety Training Package No. 025, Modifications—The Management of Change or better still, incidents that have occurred in your own company.

This training has enabled chemical engineers to become leading contribntors to a number of interdisciplinary areas, inclnding catalysis, colloid science and technology, combnstion, electrochemical engineering, and polymer science and technology. 

Chemical engineering undergraduate eurricula have traditionally been designed to train students for employment in the conventional chemical processing industries. The eurrent core emrieulum is remarkably successful in this effort. Chemical engineers will continue to play a major role in the ehemical and petroleum industries, but new areas of application as well as new emphases on environmental protection process safety and advanced computation, design, and proeess control will require some modifications of the curriculiun.
