Environmental protection process

Acid gases are mainly hydrogen sulfide (H2S) originating essentially from hydrotreating units off-gas. Smaller quantities are also produced in thermal and catalytic cracking units. 

Hydrogen sulfide concentrates in refinery off gases. Before being used as fuel gas, the gas undergoes an amine (MEA, DEA, etc.) washing step in order to extract the H2S. 

The rich amine loaded with H2S is regenerated and recycled to the contacting column. 

The concentrated hydrogen sulfide gas is then sent to the sulfur production unit (Claus process). 

The Claus process converts the H2S to sulfur by controlled combustion of the acid gas and Claus reaction on a catalyst.

Chemical engineering undergraduate eurricula have traditionally been designed to train students for employment in the conventional chemical processing industries. The eurrent core emrieulum is remarkably successful in this effort. Chemical engineers will continue to play a major role in the ehemical and petroleum industries, but new areas of application as well as new emphases on environmental protection process safety and advanced computation, design, and proeess control will require some modifications of the curriculiun. 

The EPA should consider establishing a national Center for Engineering Research on Environmental Protection and Process Safety (CERES), modeled on the National Center for Atmospheric Research. Chemical and process engineering researchers would benefit from a special collection of state-of-the-art laboratory facilities and computational resources dedicated to research on environmental protection, process... 

Reactive absorption is essentially an old process, known since the foundation of modem industry. This is a very important process, too, being the basic operation in many technological chains. More recently, the role of RA as a key environmental protection process has grown up significantly.
