Chain Loading

Drive Types. Variable-speed drives may be selected on a chain-strength basis when operating with infrequent high chain loads such as from a torque convener, variable-speed motor, or multispeed transmission.

Fatigue strength in the finite-life range is a very important consideration in designing engineering steel chains. Loads sometimes exceed the fatigue Unfit in some heavily loaded conveyors and drives. 

Many factors affect the noise level of a drive. Some of these factors include the amount and type of chain loading, the amount and quality of lubrication, the numb of sprocket teeth, the chain pitch, the fit between the chain and sprocket, chain wear, and sprocket wear. There may be, and probably are, additional factors that have not yet been clearly identified. Usually it is necessary to make a series of sound tests on a prototype or the actual drive to detomine the noise level of the drive. One or two tests are not enough to show the normal variation in noise levels between one set of chains and sprockets and the next... 

The mechanisms of deexcitation of stressed chains have been discussed en passant while investigating bond strength and chain loading. These mechanisms are chain slip with respect to a surrounding matrix (enthalpy relaxation), change of chain conformation (entropy relaxation), or chain rupture. 

Quite obviously the role of chain loading and scission within the three strength determining mechanisms will be quite different. It has been stated repeatedly throughout this book that the load carrying capabilities of chain molecules are utilized most effectively if chain orientation and intermolecular attraction permit the gradual accumulation of large axial chain stresses and oppose slip and...
