The first compound of this series, CeSI, was reported by Carter (68) in 1961, and later discussed by Dagron (93). It was obtained by the reaction of iodine with cerium sulfide at 430 C, or by direct synthesis from the elements at 500°C. This was the start of a detailed investigation of this group of compounds mainly by Dagron and co-workers. The present situation is presented in Table VII. Until recently, cadmium red was the preferred choice of red pigment for containers, toys, and household items, replacing pigments derived from toxic heavy metals such as lead and mercury, but cadmium is now considered totally undesirable and its pigments are being phased out, probably to be replaced with cerium sulfide, which gives a rich red colour, is stable up to 350 °C, and is completely non-toxic. [Pg.63]

Yellow and orange Cadmium sulfide produces orange-yeUow or similar shades when combined with zinc or selenium, but it contains the problematic heavy metal and is mainly used in engineering applications. Lead chromate produces bright yellows, but is light-sensitive and must be treated. Lead chromate, sulfite, and molybdate combined can create a stable orange color.
