Crystals suspended in liquors emerging from crystallizers are normally passed to solid-liquid separation devices such as gravity settlers or thickeners that may subsequently feed filters to remove yet more liquid prior to drying. Here the transport processes of particle motion and the flow of fluids through porous media are important in determining equipment size, the operation of which may be intensified by application of a centrifugal force. [Pg.264]

The classifier described above works very well with coarse particles where exact splits are not needed. Typical applications are in connection with ball or rod mills for reduction to particle sizes between 8- and 20-mesh. These classifiers have high capacities they lift coarse solids for return to the mill, so that auxiliary conveyors and elevators are not required. There are other types of classifier that must be usual for close separations with fine particles. One such device is the centrifugal classifier its action bears a strong resemblance to that of the crossflow classifier, but the settling is greatly accelerated by the substitution of centrifugal force for gravitational force. [Pg.160]

The need to separate solid and liquid phases is probably the most common phase separation requirement in the process industries, and a variety of techniques is used (Figure 10.9). Separation is effected by either the difference in density between the liquid and solids, using either gravity or centrifugal force, or, for filtration, depends on the particle size and shape. The most suitable technique to use will depend on the solids concentration and feed rate, as well as the size and nature of the solid particles.
