Centrifugation is an alternative method when the filtration is ineffective, such as in the case of small particles. Centrifugation requires more expensive equipment than filtration and typically cannot be scaled to the same capacity as filtration equipment. 

Mechanical Design The vertical basket centrifuge is equipped with a cylindrical basket rotating about the vertical axis. The basket shell is normally perforated and lined with filtration media consisting of filter cloth, and backing screens to provide liquid drainage paths to the basket holes. Securing the filter cloth may be by hook and loop attachment or with snap-in retainers. 

Many suspensions of solids in liquids are difiBcult to separate by gravitational, centrifugal, or vacuum techniques by reason of slow settling characteristics, poor fiherability, high solids content and other fectors. hi this circumstances, iiere large separating areas may prove necessary, the use of pressure filtration equipment is indicated. 

The types and styles of filtration equipment are legion, but generally fall into one of the four categories viz, gravity, vacuum, centrifuge and pressure. 

Various types of filtration equipment or hardware employ one of four main classes of driving force gravity, vacuum, pressure or centrifugal force. The choice of which type of equipment to use in a specific application depends upon many widely differing factors, which will not be detailed in this chapter.
