Center for Plastics Recycling Research

But how and where does a group like this get its facts In 1985, PRF made its primary objective the establishment and support of the Center for Plastics Recycling Research (CPRR) at Rutgers University. Funds totaling nearly 2.3 million in 19 -89 to support research come from PRF, Rutgers University, and other organizations such as SPI, the National... [Pg.41]

A study by the Center for Plastic Recycling Research (CPRR) at Rutgers University analyzed the curbside and drop-off collection of mixed plastics in which the only plastic types specified were heverape bottles. It showed the bottle composition to be roughly 50% PET soda bottles, 30% milk and water bottles and 10-20% non-specified plastic, by weight [Morrow and Metriam, 1989]. The plastic composition from two of the communities (curbside collection in Mt Olive, NJ and drop-off collection in South Plainfield, NJ) is shown in Table 2.4. It provides details on plastics contributed that were not specified for collection in the program. There is a large increase in non-specified plastic collection for the drop-off site study in comparison to the curbside collection study. This illustrates the need for public education and clear, simple collection instructions. [Pg.23]

The following relative truck volumes have been estimated by the Center for Plastics Recycling Research for collection of recyclables old newsprint, 23.2% glass bottles, 13.0% steel cans, 10.7% aluminum cans, 16% PET beverage bottles, 17.6% and HDPE... [Pg.61]

The Center for Plastics Recycling Research (CPRR) at Rutgers University was commissioned to develop a process for the reclamation of soda bottles that could be widely demonstrated and transferred to the public to spur increased recycling in this area. This was done because there are a number of companies in the U.S. which recycle PET soda bottles, but their methods are generally proprietary and not licensed ouL The Rutgers Beverage Bottle Reclamation Process (BBRP) is not meant to separate PET soda bottle colors or other type plastics, but rather to provide clean PET flake separated from caps, labels, base cups and adhesives. [Pg.130]

There has always been some degree of development, principally by equipment manufacturers, to improve the quality of recycled plastics and make them more competitive with virgin materials. To expand R D, the Center for Plastic Recycling Research, a foundation established in 1984 by the Society of the Plastics Industry (SPI), is making important headway in solving some of the problems that tend to limit the use of reclaimable plastics. In December 1985 this group dedicated an experimental pilot plant at Rutgers University specifically to advance research into plastics recovery and reuse. [Pg.896]
