Cell death promoters

Rickman DW, Nacke RE, Bowes Rickman C. Characterization of the cell death promoter, Bad, in the developing rat retina and forebrain. Dev Brain Res 1999 115 41 17. [Pg.52]

Polyethers. Antibiotics within this family contain a number of cycHc ether and ketal units and have a carboxyHc acid group. They form complexes with mono- and divalent cations that ate soluble ia aoapolar organic solvents. They iateract with bacterial cell membranes and allow cations to pass through the membranes causiag cell death. Because of this property they have been classified as ionophores. Monensia, lasalocid, and maduramicia are examples of polyethers that are used commercially as anticoccidial agents ia poultry and as growth promotants ia mmiaants. [Pg.474]

Neuronal survival and differentiation are regulated by many factors including neurotrophins and the Trk family of RPTKs. The prototype neurotrophin, nerve growth factor (NGF), promotes the survival of neurons during a period of programmed cell death in embryonic and early postnatal developmental stages. It is a target-derived neurotrophic factor that modulates the functions of the... [Pg.426]

The use of alkali and alkaline earth group metal ions, especially those of sodium, potassium, magnesium, and calcium, for maintenance of electrolyte balance and for signaling and promotion of enzyme activity and protein function are not discussed in this text. Many of these ions, used for signaling purposes in the exciting area of neuroscience, are of great interest. In ribozymes, RNAs with catalytic activity, solvated magnesium ions stabilize complex secondary and tertiary molecular structure. Telomeres, sequences of DNA at the ends of chromosomes that are implicated in cell death or immortalization, require potassium ions for structural stabilization. [Pg.371]
