In specific situations of cells, e.g., during cell cycle progression and differentiation, the methylation pattern can be quite dynamic. Enzymes have been identified that function as demethylases and can alter the methylation pattern. Furthermore, DNA methylation has been recognized as an important aspect of tumorigenesis. Changes in the methylation pattern have been linked in many tumors to decreased expression of tumor suppressor genes (see Chapter 14). 

At coarser levels of control, there are large-scale cytoskeletal effects upon the pattern and site of cell wall assembly and the whole process is closely linked to the cell cycle. 

Finally, perhaps an explanation for the beneficial effects of coenzyme A (CoA), malate and pyruvate for the extracellular in vitro growth of P. lophurae found by Trager (1952) and interpreted by Moulder (1962) to neatly explain the shift in pattern of carbohydrate metabolism accompanying liberation of parasites from the host cell. .. (The) lack of CoA in free parasites logically explains the lessened rate of pyruvic acid oxidation via the Krebs cycle. It is difficult to escape the conclusion that the inability of plasmodia to synthesize CoA extracellularly results in extensive dislocations in glucose metabolism, which in turn contribute heavily to the restriction of the malarial parasite to an intracellular habitat is this malate and pyruvate could be linked to the generation of dihydronicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NADH) for glycolysis, and a CoA deficiency could limit activity in pathways other than the TCA cycle. 

When scan cells are linked to form a scan chain as shown in Figure 8.1, all the scan cells are controllable and observable. Since shifting of data into the scan chain is performed serially, it takes N clock cycles to shift an entire pattern into the scan chain, where N is the maximum length of the scan chain. Configurations with multiple scan chains are supported by most synthesis tools.
