Cell clock

When rubidium gas is placed in sealed glass cells along with an inert gas, it becomes a rubidium-gas cell clock. Because of the consistent and exact frequency (vibrations) of it atoms, it is a very accurate timekeeper. [Pg.59]

Sassone-Corsi There are experiments on they> r-luciferase transgenics showing that each single neuron in the SCN has an independent single-cell clock. These appear to be self-sustaining for a long time. In fact, there was a difference from one cell to another. [Pg.156]

The presence or absence of these free radicals can change the cell clock and affect the rate at which cells divide. The production of unwanted free radicals inside some cells makes them divide at a rapid rate. In these circumstances some cells make abnormal or cancerous growths. If there are too many free radicals the cells are killed altogether. [Pg.197]

Biological systems are collective systems indeed. They seem to be satisfactorily described when the list of their components is supplemented by the prescription of their location inside the system and the timing of their operation. Biologists refer to such a timing as a cell clock what is now... [Pg.263]

By default, TC allocates all scan cells clocked by the same clock, to the same scan chain. Also, scan cells clocked by different edges of the clock are placed in different scan chains. Hence, if one has only one test clock in the testmode, because of multiplexing the functional clocks, TC will place all the scan cells in the same scan chain, by default. [Pg.228]

Von Neumann was able to construct a self-reproducing UTM embedded within a 29-state/5-cell neighborhood two-dimensional cellular automaton, composed of several tens of thousands of cells. It was, to say the least, an enormously complex machine . Its set of 29 states consist largely of various logical building blocks (AND and OR gates, for example), several types of transmission lines, data encoders and recorders, clocks, etc. Von Neumann was unfortunately unable to finish the proof that his machine was a UTM before his death, but the proof was later completed and published by Arthur Burks [vonN66]. [Pg.571]

In all types of mammalian cells, the molecular mechanism underlying circadian clock function is based upon interconnected transcription/translation feedback loops [2] (Fig. 2). Two proteins that function as transcriptional... [Pg.367]

At its most fundamental level, the circadian cycle rests on the influence of so-called clock genes . These genes have been studied most extensively in insects but they have also been found in humans. Their protein products enter the cell nucleus and regulate their own transcription. This feedback process is linked to exposure to light and so it is not surprising that visual inputs are important for maintenance of circadian rhythms. However, it is not the reception of specific visual information, transmitted in the optic nerve to the lateral geniculate nucleus (LGN) and visual cortex (i.e. visual discrimination), that is responsible for the rhythm but the more simple, almost subconscious, reception of light. [Pg.478]

Nasmyth There is a similar situation in Drosophila, where you also have a high cytoplasminucleus ratio. The only problem in Nenopus is that the whole cell cycle clock is occurring throughout the entire cytoplasm, whereas Drosophila has a certain degree of nuclear autonomy. Even there, these controls are missing to some extent. [Pg.234]

At regular intervals as determined by a virtual clock, every cell updates its state, using a rule that depends both on its current state and on the current state of its neighbors. In this first example, in which successive states of the CA are written one below the other, the transition rule is... [Pg.176]
