Ceiling boxes

A laboratory can sometimes save money by building a simple hood where no hazardous, flammable, or corrosive fumes are involved. In one case, a hood was needed solely for drawing off unpleasant fumes from a muffle furnace and water vapor. A carpenter constructed a plywood box which reached from counter top to ceiling and had a large opening in the front. This was painted with a resistant paint, primarily to seal the surfaces and make them easy to clean. An inexpensive fan exhausted the hood to the outside. This simple hood worked for many years. 

Clean and aseptic areas must be adequately illuminated lights are best housed above transparent panels set in a false ceiling. Electrical switches and sockets should fit flush to the wall. When required, gases should be piped into the area from outside the unit. Pipes and ducts, if they have to be brought into the clean area, must be effechvely sealed through the walls. Additionally they must either be boxed in (which prevents dust accumulation) or readily cleanable. Alternatively, pipes and ducts may be sited above false ceilings. 

Pulleys are often used to lift things. For instance, a pulley could be attached to the ceiling of a room. A rope could be run from the floor, up through the pulley, and back down to a box sitting on the floor. The pulley would allow you to pull down on the rope and cause the box to go up. That is, the pulley causes a change in direction of the pulling force. 

The experiments were similar to those that I carried out with Miss Z and Monroe in that Swann sat in a comfortable chair with electrodes attached for measuring brain waves and various autonomic functions. He attempted to focus his consciousness outside his body and see target material, which was located in an open-top box hung from the ceiling. The material would be readily visible from a position above the box but invisible to anyone in the room. Initially, a five-digit random number was used as a target, as in my study of Miss Z, but Swann did not feel...

The fumes of frequently used insecticide, such as paradichloroben-zene, are often heavier than air. The crystals should be packaged and placed on the ceiling of a cabinet or a box. Objects made of leather, skin, fur, feathers, intestine, wax, and certain resins should be stored elsewhere as they may be adversely affected by volatile insecticides. It has been reported that ethylene oxide fumigation affects certain natural dyes (16). As there are so many factors yet to be investigated regarding the effects of fumigation on museum fabrics and particularly on dyes, this treatment should be done with utmost caution.

Expanded polystyrene loose-fill is used in many markets today. The most common are dunnage (used to fill up space in a shipping box), cushioning (where the resilient qualities of the polystyrene foam are used), and texturizer, where it is ground into smaller particles and used in making textured ceilings in commercial and residential buildings. 

The owner (Milwaukee, WI) built an elevated—about 5 ft high—composite deck completely enclosed with the same composite boards, thereby creating a box perfectly insulated from any air movement. There were no windows in the box. The top of the box, that is, the deck itself, was pretty warm on a warm day, and rainwaters dripping into the box created a warm and very humid environment. The ceiling of the box, that is, the bottom side of the deck, was warm to touch from the inside of the box. After several months, the owner noticed small dark spots on the ceiling of the box, when she looked from the inside of her house through a small door, normally closed. There were no spots on the sidewalls of the box.
