The cell-free system allows the fractionation of components found in normal bacterial strains and comparison of these strains to mutated ones. Thus a new protein, termed the catabolite gene activator protein (CAP), has been partially purified and found to be present in normal strains. The interaction of this protein with the lac system and its role in control with be discussed in Section IV. 

This factor, which has been named catabolite gene activator protein (CAP), is a basic protein with a molecular weight of 45,000. When subjected to SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, CAP dissociates into a single polypeptide chain of molecular weight, 22,000.
