Extmsion of polyethylene and some polypropylenes is usually through a circular die into a tubular form, which is cut and collapsed into flat film. Extmsion through a linear slot onto chilled rollers is called casting and is often used for polypropylene, polyester, and other resins. Cast, as well as some blown, films may be further heated and stretched in the machine or in transverse directions to orient the polymer within the film and improve physical properties such as tensile strength, stiffness, and low temperature resistance. [Pg.453]

The first of these reactions takes place at temperatures of about 150°C, the second reaction proceeds at about 550—660°C. Typical furnaces used to carry out the reaction include cast-iron retorts the Mannheim mechanical furnace, which consists of an enclosed stationary circular muffle having a concave bottom pan and a domed cover and the Laury furnace, which employs a horizontal two-chambered rotating cylinder for the reaction vessel. The most recent design is the Cannon fluid-bed reactor in which the sulfuric acid vapor is injected with the combustion gases into a fluidized bed of salts. The special forms consist of the many types of anode which are used for protecting smaller containers. Boilers, heat exchangers and condensers belong to this group. Besides the rod anodes already mentioned with tube screw joints which can be screwed into the container from outside, there are also short and round anode supports as well as more or less flat ball segments which are bolted onto the protected surface with cast-on supports. These shapes are mostly manufactured from magnesium alloys. In addition, there are star-shaped or circular anodes for installation in condensers and pipes.
