CASS test ASTM

The American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) 1916 Race Street Philadelphia, Pa. 19103 The ASTM MnnualBook ofMSTM Standards contains all up-to-date formally approved (ca 9000) ASTM standard specifications, test methods, classifications, definitions, practices, and related materials, eg, proposals. These are arranged in 15 sections plus an index volume as follows. [Pg.23]

Insulating Brick ASTM classifies insulating firebrick under C155 by group. The group number corresponds to the service temperature divided by 100 (Table 13). For example, group 16 corresponds to a test temperature of ca 1600°F (871°C). [Pg.33]

Chapter 6 Smoke test. The test is based on the National Bureau of Standards (NBS, now NIST, National Institute of Standards and Technology) smoke density chamber, which has also been standardized as ASTM E 66239 (see also Section 4.1.1). The test exposes a vertical test specimen ca. 75 mm x 75 mm (3 in. x 3 in.) to an incident radiant heat flux of 25kW/m2, from a radiant heat burner for 4 min, in the presence of an open-flame pilot burner. The test applies to the same materials as the heat release rate test. The acceptance criterion is an average maximum specific optical density of smoke that does not exceed 200 (no units). [Pg.599]

Requirements for upholstered furniture flammability exist in various states, including California, based on California Technical Bulletin 133 (CA TB 133),91 which was also made into a consensus standard by ASTM committee E05 as ASTM E 1537.92 The gas burner used as the ignition source in CA TB 133 is a square-shaped burner that applies propane gas for 80s at a flow rate of 13L/min. The test is severe enough that it can usually not be met, unless the foam contained in the upholstered furniture item is flame-retarded. The pass/fail criteria are a peak heat release rate of 80 kW and a total heat released that does not exceed 25 MJ over the first 10 min of the test. In California, moreover, all foam contained within upholstered furniture must be flame-retarded to comply with CA TB 117. Moreover, the IFC and NFPA 101 both have parallel requirements to those discussed earlier for mattresses. In other words, the 2006 editions of both the codes contain requirements that upholstered furniture items in health care occupancies as well as detention and correctional occupancies that are not sprinklered must comply with a peak heat release rate of 250kW and a total heat release of no more than 40 MJ in the first 5 min of the test, when tested to ASTM E 1537 (or CA TB 133). However, the 2007 edition of the IFC and the 2009 edition of NFPA 101 lowered these values to 80 kW and 25 MJ over 10 min. Finally, the IFC 2007 added college and university dormitories to the list and eliminated the sprinkler exception for detention occupancies. [Pg.614]

A number of modern full-scale fire test methods have been developed for products, relying on heat release rate measurements, such as those involving testing of upholstered furniture (ASTM E 153792 and CA TB 13391), mattresses (ASTM E 1590,85 CA TB 129,82 CA TB 603,88 16 CFR 1633,19 and ASTM F 1085 [Annexes A1 and A3]171), stacking chairs (ASTM E 1822172), electrical cables (ASTM D 5424,173 ASTM D 5537,174 and UL 1685123), plastic display stands (UL 1975),175 other decorative items (NFPA 289,176 a generic furniture calorimeter test), electrical equipment (UL 2043),120 or wall-lining products (NFPA 265,116 NFPA 286,115 ASTM E 2257,177 and ISO 9705178). In fact, room-corner tests are now being used in the codes, as alternatives to replace the... [Pg.646]

In this test the rebound of a diamond-tipped weight dropped from a fixed height is measured (Maxwell, 1955 ASTM, 1978). Model C (HSc) uses a small hammer (ca 2.3 g) and a fall of about 251 mm model D (HSd) uses a hammer of about ca 36 g and a fall of about 18 mm. [Pg.7]

ASTM D 5815 Standard Test Method for Determination of Phenolic Antioxidants and Erucamide Slip Additives in Linear Low-Density Polyethylene Using Liquid Chromatography This ASTM is very similar to ASTM D 1996, except that LLDPE samples are analyzed, and extraction is performed with either isobutanol or isopropanol prior to liquid-chromatographic separation. Isopropanol is recommended as the extraction solvent for lower crystallinity LLDPE (density 0.925 g/ cm and below), and isobutanol is recommended as the extraction solvent for higher crystallinity LLDPE. As the standard notes, besides Irganox 1010, Irganox 1076, and Isonox 129, the test method should be applicable for the determination of other antioxidants such as Ultranox 626, Ethanox 330, Santanox R, and Topanol CA, but the applicability of this test method has not been investigated for these antioxidants. Precision of the procedure is somewhat poorer compared to that of ASTM D 1996 ... [Pg.548]

The n-d-M method is an empirical method for determining the carbon type distribution (%CP %CN, %CA) by simple measurement of the refractive index ( ), density (d), and molecular weight (M) of the sample. It also provides the mean number of naphthenic (RN) and aromatic (RA) rings per molecule. The method was developed by researchers at Koninklijke/Shell in Holland after World War II. Its application includes lube feedstocks and raffinates.2 Nearly all applications have been to solvent refined stocks. The current American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) method is D3238. ASTM D2140 is applicable to insulating oils. [Pg.76]
