Case study Reducing emissions to the air from a fertiliser plant

We will here present a case from a fertiliser plant. It involves the successful introduction of a new system for feedback control of accidental emission to the environment. The system illustrates some basic qualities in accident prevention through experience feedback. [Pg.25]

Before the system was introduced, emissions were registered continuously by measuring the nitrogen content in the exhaust air in the pipe. This information was stored and summarised in internal reports and reports to the authorities. In case of major accidental emissions, the causes were analysed [Pg.25]

The integrated process control and expert system was introduced at time 0. [Pg.26]

Let us look into the contents of the remaining parts of the book in light of this example. They help us in answering such questions as  [Pg.26]

How to prevent accidental releases from occurring Chapter 5 introduces the concept of barriers against accidents and this concept is fnrther developed and exemplified in Chapter 7. We will there review different types of barriers from a generic perspective. Chapter 7 will help ns in identifying the different possibilities of preventing accidental releases of pollution. [Pg.27]
