Carry-off

Bismuth concentrates in the dorn until the last stages of cupeUation, when it is oxidized and removed with the Htharge. After the last Htharge has been removed, it is often necessary to add bars of refined lead to provide more Htharge to carry off the last traces of bismuth. The dorn metal is then cast into bars for marketing. [Pg.47]

Vacuum Treatment. Milk can be exposed to a vacuum to remove low boiling substances, eg, onions, garlic, and some silage, which may impart off-flavors to the milk, particularly the fat portion. A three-stage vacuum unit, known as a vacreator, produces pressures of 17, 51—68, and 88—95 kPa (127, 381—508, and 660—711 mm Hg). A continuous vacuum unit in the HTST system may consist of one or two chambers and be heated by Hve steam, with an equivalent release of water by evaporation, or flash steam to carry off the volatiles. If Hve steam is used, it must be cuUnary steam which is produced by heating potable water with an indirect heat exchanger. Dry saturated steam is desired for food processing operations. [Pg.359]

For any nuclear decay, such as the emission of a y-ray, the angular momentum and parity must be conserved. Therefore, ify,H and H are the spins and parities of the initial and final levels, and L and H are the angular momentum and parity carried off by the y-ray. [Pg.445]

Electron Capture and /5" "-Decay. These processes are essentially the inverse of the j3 -decay in that the parent atom of Z andM transmutes into one of Z — 1 andM. This mode of decay can occur by the capture of an atomic electron by the nucleus, thereby converting a proton into a neutron. The loss of one lepton (the electron) requires the creation of another lepton (a neutrino) that carries off the excess energy, namely Q — — Z(e ), where the last term is the energy by which the electron was bound to the atom before it was captured. So the process is equivalent to... [Pg.448]

In addition to the possible multipolarities discussed in the previous sections, internal-conversion electrons can be produced by an EO transition, in which no spin is carried off by the transition. Because the y-rays must carry off at least one unit of angular momentum, or spin, there are no y-rays associated with an EO transition, and the corresponding internal-conversion coefficients are infinite. The most common EO transitions are between levels with J = = where the other multipolarities caimot contribute. However, EO transitions can also occur mixed with other multipolarities whenever... [Pg.454]

Saline Water for Municipal Distribution. Only a very small amount of potable water is actually taken by people or animals internally, and it is quite uneconomical to desalinate all municipally piped water, although all distributed water must be clear and free of harmful bacteria. Most of the water piped to cities and industry is used for Htfle more than to carry off small amounts of waste materials or waste heat. In many locations, seawater can be used for most of this service. If chlorination is requited, it can be accompHshed by direct electrolysis of the dissolved salt (21). Arrayed against the obvious advantage of economy, there are several disadvantages use of seawater requites different detergents sewage treatment plants must be modified the usual metal pipes, pumps, condensers, coolers, meters, and other equipment corrode more readily chlorination could cause environmental poUution and dual water systems must be built and maintained. [Pg.237]

In addition to maintaining the circulation of the reaction Hquid, the inert gas is important in temperature control, and it prevents the formation of a separate nonaqueous phase by carrying off substantial quantities of dichloropropane in the effluent. [Pg.74]

For drying, it is important to provide a small amount of venting air to carry away the water vapor. This is needed for two reasons. First, water vapor is a good absorber of 2- to 7- Im energy. Second, water-vapor accumulation depresses further vapor release by the sohds. If the air over the solids is kept fairly dry by venting, veiy little heat is carried off, because diy air does not absorb radiant heat. [Pg.1062]

The escaping bubbles from the top of a bubble-fractionation column can carry off an appreciable quantity of adsorbed material in an aerosol of very fine film drops [various papers, J. Geophys. Res., Oceans Atmos., 77(27), (1972)]. If the residu solute is thus appre-ciablv depleted, Cj in Eq. (22-57) should be replaced with the average residual concentration. [Pg.2022]

Antimony trichloride [10025-91-9] M 228.1, m 73", b 283", pK 1.4, pK j ll.O (11.8), PKI 12.95 (for Sb " " aquo). Dried over P2O5 or by mixing with toluene or xylene and distilling (water is carried off with the organic solvent), then distd twice under dry nitrogen at 50mm, degassed and sublimed twice in a vacuum into ampoules. Can be crystd from CS2. Deliquescent. Fumes in moist air. [Pg.396]

The residue of the ether solution is fractionally distilled under a reduced pressure and the fraction is collected, which boils under a pres-sure of 12 mm. at a temperature of from 138° to 155° C., and from it the unattacked citral and unchanged acetone and volatile products of condensation are separated in a current of steam, which readily carries off these bodies. [Pg.218]

The more dense, more mature peas sink and are drawn off near the bottom of the separator, while the less dense, less mature peas float and are carried off at the top. During the process the peas absorb salt, and unless it is removed by thorough washing enough may be retained to make the product objectionable to the taste. In a packing specification it is necessary to state the amount of salt that will be tolerated. Available methods for the determination of salt are not applicable to production-line control. One which is sufficiently simple and rapid for this purpose is definitely needed. [Pg.33]
