Adult polycystic kidney disease (APKD) is one of the most common autosomal dominant diseases, affecting about 1/1,000 whites. The key feature of this disease is the progressive accumulation of renal cysts, which ultimately culminate in kidney failure. APKD is responsible for approximately 10% of end-stage renal disease in North America. Patients may also have hypertension, cerebral aneurysms, liver cysts, and cardiac valvular defects. [Pg.328]

Cardiogenic shock is also caused by mechanical abnormalities of the ventricle. Acute mitral or ventricular aneurysm, usually caused by acute myocardial infarction, can cause a severe reduction in forward cardiac output and thereby result in cardiogenic shock. [Pg.142]

The term, arrhythmogenic substrate, became a matter of interest to many researchers. The arrhythmogenic substrate means the pathologic and anatomic preconditions for the initiation of tachyarrhythmias such as myocardial fibrosis, aneurysm, the border zone between normal and ischemic or infarcted tissue, scars, diffuse myocardial injury in cardiomyopathy or the chronic alterations induced by myocarditis, and furthermore, accessory pathways or variations in the specific cardiac conduction system. These anatomic or pathologic altera-... [Pg.1]

Use phenylephrine 10% with caution in patients with cardiac disease, idiopathic orthostatic hypotension, hypertension, aneurysms, insulin-dependent diabetes, and advanced arteriosclerosis. [Pg.117]

Because of its risk of adverse pressor effects, the 10% concentration of topical phenylephrine should be avoided for pupillary dilation, especially in patients with cardiac disease, systemic hypertension, aneurysms, and advanced arteriosclerosis. However, mild hypertension is not necessarily a contraindication to the use of the 2.5% concentration phenylephrine. [Pg.335]

Because of all these complications spread of his cancer, hypertension, probably carotid artery disease and the aortic aneurysm, he was told by his doctors that nothing else could be done. He was sent home on one aspirin per day and some cardiac drugs. [Pg.77]

The above findings confirm that exposure to PSCI RCAs by airborne dispersion or by contamination in solution produce abrupt and marked increases in SBP and DBP, with resolution within about 0.5 h of the start of exposure. The magnitude and duration of the changes can be tolerated without significant medical hazards in healthy individuals. However, as with other stressful situations, some susceptible individuals may be at increased risk from the induced transient hypertensive episode this will include those with essential hypertension, established myocardial infarction and coronary artery disease, cardiac arrhythmias and arterial aneurysms (Ballantyne, 1977a, 1987 Ballantyne and Salem, 2004). [Pg.596]

As discussed in detail above, those exposed to smokes, aerosols or solutions of PCSI materials may have transient increases in SBP and DBP, often accompanied by a reflex bradycardia. This could be compounded with that caused by the emotional experience of being involved in a civil disturbance. Those who give a history of cardiovascular disease (notably myocardial infarction, coronary artery disease, cardiac arrhythmias, essential hypertension, aneurysm) may require admission and further investigation. [Pg.600]

Atenolol is indicated in arteriosclerotic heart disease with angina pectoris, hypertension, cardiac arrhythmias and myocardial infarction in hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy, dissecting aneurysm of the aorta, pheochro-mocytoma, and in prevention of migraine headaches. [Pg.92]
