Carbonate Fuel Cell MCFC

This type of cell uses lithium, sodium and/or potassium carbonate electrolyte soaked in a ceramic matrix of LiA102 and operates at 650°C, a temperature that is necessary to achieve sufficient conductivity of the electrolyte, but with the dual benefits of achieving a higher efficiency (60% and 85% if the waste heat is used) and not requiring a noble metal catalyst. However, corrosion due to the molten carbonate is a problem. 

It is normal practice to recycle the CO2 generated at the anode to the cathode, where it is consumed. 

The commercialization of this type of electrode is being followed by Energy Research Corporation (ERC), International Fuel Cells Corporation and M-C Power Corporation (MCP)in the USA Brandstofel Nederland (BCN), Deutsche Aerospace AG and Ansaldo (Italy) in Europe and Hitachi, Ishikawajima-Harima Heavy Industries, Mitsubishi Electric Corporation in Japan.

Hydrogen use as a fuel in fuel cell appHcations is expected to increase. Fuel cells (qv) are devices which convert the chemical energy of a fuel and oxidant directiy into d-c electrical energy on a continuous basis, potentially approaching 100% efficiency. Large-scale (11 MW) phosphoric acid fuel cells have been commercially available since 1985 (276). Molten carbonate fuel cells (MCFCs) ate expected to be commercially available in the mid-1990s (277). 

The PAFC is, however, suitable for stationary power generation, but faces several direct fuel cell competitors. One is the molten carbonate fuel cell (MCFC), which operates at "650°C and uses an electrolyte made from molten potassium and lithium carbonate salts. Fligh-teinperature operation is ideal for stationary applications because the waste heat can enable co-generation it also allows fossil fuels to be reformed directly within the cells, and this reduces system size and complexity. Systems providing up to 2 MW have been demonstrated. 

In order to describe the geometrical and structural properties of several anode electrodes of the molten carbonate fuel cell (MCFC), a fractal analysis has been applied. Four kinds of the anode electrodes, such as Ni, Ni-Cr (lOwt.%), Ni-NiaAl (7wt.%), Ni-Cr (5wt.%)-NijAl(5wt.%) were prepared [1,2] and their fractal dimensions were evaluated by nitrogen adsorption (fractal FHH equation) and mercury porosimetry. These methods of fractal analysis and the resulting values are discussed and compared with other characteristic methods and the performances as anode of MCFC.

There are six different types of fuel cells (Table 1.6) (1) alkaline fuel cell (AFC), (2) direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC), (3) molten carbonate fuel cell (MCFC), (4) phosphoric acid fuel cell (PAFC), (5) proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC), and (6) the solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC). They all differ in applications, operating temperatures, cost, and efficiency. 

For natural-gas-fuelled CHP plants, the same line of argumentation holds as for the stationary use of hydrogen from biomass. It is more reasonable to use natural gas directly than to convert it to hydrogen first and then to heat and electricity. High electrical efficiencies can be reached in the stationary sector by feeding natural gas to molten-carbonate fuel cells (MCFC) and solid-oxide fuel cells (SOFC). Molten-carbonate fuel cells have the added advantage of using C02 for the electrolyte (see also Chapter 13).

The fuel cell operates at 600 to 700°C where the alkali carbonates form a highly conductive molten salt, with carbonate ions providing ionic conduction. At the high operating temperatures in MCFCs, Ni (anode) and nickel oxide (cathode) are adequate to promote reaction. Noble metals are not required.

Molten carbonate fuel cells (MCFCs) are currently being developed for natural gas and coal-based power plants for electrical utility, industrial, and military applications. MCFCs are high-temperature fuel cells that use an electrolyte composed of a molten carbonate salt mixture suspended in a porous, chemically inert ceramic lithium aluminium oxide (LiAI02) matrix. Since they operate at extremely high temperatures of 650°C and above, non-precious metals can be used as catalysts at the anode and cathode, reducing costs.

Fuel cells can be broadly classified into two types high temperature fuel cells such as molten carbonate fuel cells (MCFCs) and solid oxide polymer fuel cells (SOFCs), which operate at temperatures above 923 K and low temperature fuel cells such as proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMs), alkaline fuel cells (AFCs) and phosphoric acid fuel cells (PAFCs), which operate at temperatures lower than 523 K. Because of their higher operating temperatures, MCFCs and SOFCs have a high tolerance for commonly encountered impurities such as CO and CO2 (CO c)- However, the high temperatures also impose problems in their maintenance and operation and thus, increase the difficulty in their effective utilization in vehicular and small-scale applications. Hence, a major part of the research has been directed towards low temperature fuel cells. The low temperature fuel cells unfortunately, have a very low tolerance for impurities such as CO , PAFCs can tolerate up to 2% CO, PEMs only a few ppm, whereas the AFCs have a stringent (ppm level) CO2 tolerance. 

As a first example of the use of reaction mechanism graphs, consider the electrochemistry of molten carbonate fuel cell (MCFC) cathodes. These cathodes are typically nickel-oxide porous electrodes with pores partially filled with a molten carbonate electrolyte. Oxygen and carbon dioxide are fed into the cathode through the vacant portions of the pores. The overall cathodic reaction is 02 + 2C02 + 4e / 2C03=. This overall reaction can be achieved through a number of reaction mechanisms two such mechanisms are the peroxide mechanism and the superoxide-peroxide mechanism, and these are considered next.
