Sulfur—carbon bonds lithium metal

Both the lithium sulfur dioxide (Li-SO and lithium thionyl chloride (Li-SOCy cells may be classified as liquid cathode systems. In these systems, S02 and SOCl2 function as solvents for the electrolyte, and as the active materials at the cathode to provide voltage and ampere capacity. As liquids, these solvents permeate the porous carbon cathode material. Lithium metal serves as the anode, and a polymer-bonded porous carbon is the cathode current collector in both systems. Both cells use a Teflon-bonded acetylene black cathode structure with metallic lithium as the anode. The Li-S02 is used in a spirally wound, jelly-roll construction to increase the surface area and improve... [Pg.422]

Benzyl phenyl sulfides can be sequentially metallated and alkylated. The cleavage of the carbon-sulfur bond in the resulting product leads to a benzyllithium and lithium phenylthiolate. Alkylation of the former organometallic then produces an alkylbenzene (Scheme 15), but competing alkylation on the thiolate is however observed. [Pg.109]

The insertion of sulfur into a reactive metal-carbon bond has been known in organic chemistry for some time, but was mainly used to prepare arenethiols (150). However, this method has only recently found its use in the synthesis of pure lithium arenethiolate complexes, which contain potentially intramolecu-larly coordinating heteroatom donor functions (50, 151). It has since then been reported that this method is also applicable for the preparation of lithium areneselenolates and arenetellurolates (152). This route has also been used for the synthesis of bis(arenethiolato)magnesium complexes with intramolecular coordination (153). [Pg.131]
