Glycoproteins, carbohydrates

HIV is a typical member of the retrovirus family, in that it is an enveloped virus that carries RNA as its genetic information. The structure of HIV (Fig. 2) has been determined by electron microscopy. The viral membrane is acquired from the infected cell as the virus buds through the cell membrane. Inserted into the viral membrane are protein molecules coupled to carbohydrates (glycoproteins) which are essential for viral infectivity and probably also play a role in the... [Pg.196]

Some biomolecules contain carbohydrate components. Nucleotides, the building block molecules of the nucleic acids, contain either of the sugars ribose or deoxyribose. Certain proteins and lipids also contain carbohydrate. Glycoproteins and glycolipids occur on the external surface of cell membranes in multicellular organisms, where they play critical roles in the interactions between cells. [Pg.16]

Tlie increasing importance discovered for carbohydrate stmctures and their stracture-function relationships is necessitating improved techniques in synthesis and analysis of carbohydrates, glycoproteins, and glycopeptides. Progress toward tlie automated synthesis has been reported and provides compunds for biological and phaniiaceutical studies. [Pg.176]
