Captan workers

Captan also has a pronounced effect on membranes. Using the electron microscope, Richmond and co-workers showed (16) that ED50 doses of Captan gave convoluted forms of the nuclear membrane to dormant conidia of Neurospora crassa and caused almost complete loss of intracellular fine structure after Captan-treated spores were incubated. 

A recent study by the Finnish Institute of Occupational Health found that woman agricultural workers exposed to certain pesticides during the first three months of pregnancy had double the risk of giving birth to deformed children. Some of the chemicals used in the study—dichlorvos, aldicarb, mancozeb, captan and naled— are used in the flower industry and other agricultural activities in Columbia. More than 60% of flower workers in Colombia are women. 

Dermal exposure to captan and benomyl by strawberry harvesters has been the subject of several previous studies (1.2.3). This field study was designed to test a number of hypotheses and the reproducibility of dermal exposure rate measurements taken under field conditions. Most of our past studies have not been designed for a particular pesticide but were modified to accommodate the pesticide chosen by the grower to control a certain pest. In this case, the pesticide was carbaryl (1-naphthyl N-methylcarbamate) an insecticide used to control the spittlebug and leafroller. Our results could then he compared with those obtained by Maitlen and co-workers (A) who studied workers exposed to carbaryl in an apple orchard. Furthermore, attempts will be made to test possible positive correlations between age and dermal dose rate versus productivity and dermal dose rate versus age of harvesters. Peluso et al. reported a case of 2-month history of finger and hand eczema in a female agricultural worker, which improved when she stopped work. Patch testings gave positive results to carbamate-mix 1% petrolatum, z5-dithiocarbamate (maneb) and thiophthalimide (captan 0.1% petrolatum, captafol 0.1% petrolatum and folpet 0.1% petrolatum) at 2 days and 3 days (+/++) [119].
