A heavy-walled Pyrex tube with a suitable lip can be sealed with a metal bottle cap and capper available at many hardware stores (Fig. A3.8). This vessel is suitable for reactions at moderate pressure only (for example, benzene heated to 100°). 

The use of recombinant bST does not reduce GHG emissions but increases milk production so that the calculated emissions/unit of milk produced is reduced (Baumann, 1992). Capper et ah (2008) evaluated the environmental impact of using bST in a conventional dairying system and reported reductions in CH4 emissions of 8.3%. 15.2% of the total of small (<100 cows), medium (100 < cows < 500), and large farm operations (cows > 500) surveyed in the United States used bST on 17.2% of the cows (USDA, 2007). The use of bST increased with the size of the operation, with 9.1% of small farms using bST and 42.7% of large farms reporting use of bST.

Miller and coworkers [325] reported using an anthracene end capper (which is twisted orthogonally in respect to the neighboring fluorene moiety) in PF 227 to enhance the color stability of PLEDs. However, the results show that the PLED fabricated with the anthracene...

Trlethylamlne, because of its basic properties was chosen as the solvent for the end-capper 1 synthesis. Reactions were run at reflux for times ranging from 2 to 30 hours. Reaction progress was followed by gas chromatography (GC) using phenol as a standard. 

Last but not least, some of us have recently synthesized polyimide-aliphatic polyester triblock and graft copolymers in collaboration with Hedrick and his coworkers [ 97,98]. Well-defined aminophenyl or diaminophenyl end-functional polyester oligomers have been synthesized on purpose and used as end-cappers or macromonomers leading to the aforementioned triblock or graft copolymers, respectively. The polyimide-polyester copolymers so obtained proved to be highly efficient promoters of polyimide nanofoams (for more details see Sect. 4.2). 

The next step concerned the synthesis of the polyester-polyimide copolymers. Triblock copolymers have been prepared by a step-growth copolymerization of stoichiometric amounts of an aromatic diamine and dianhydride (e.g., PMDA and 3FDA, as depicted in Scheme 41a) added with the single oo-amino polyesters as chain end-cappers. Graft copolymers can be prepared as well. In this case, the diamine end-functionalized oligomeric macromonomers are copolymerized with the polyimide condensation comonomers (Scheme 41b).

If desired, controlled molecular weight PAEH can be prepared by upsetting the stoichiometry in favor of one of the monomers. An end-capper such as m-cresol for fluoro terminated arylene ethers or 4-fluorobenzophenone for hydroxy terminated arylene ethers can be used to terminate the polymer chains. 

The key to acetylene terminated polyimides is the availability of the end-capper which carries the acetylene group. Hergenrother (130) published a series of ATI resins based on 4-ethynylphthalic anhydride as endcapping agent. This approach first requires the synthesis of an amine-terminated amide acid prepolymer, by reacting 1 mole of tetracarboxylic dianhydride with 2 moles of diamine, which subsequently is endcapped with 4-ethynylphthalic anhydride. The imide oligomer is finally obtained via chemical cyclodehydration. The properties of the ATI resin prepared via this route are not too different from those prepared from 3-ethynylaniline as an endcapper. When l,3-bis(3-aminophenox)benzene was used as diamine, the prepolymer is completely soluble in DMAc or NMP at room temperature, whereas 4,4 -methylene dianiline and 4,4 -oxydianiline based ATIs were only partially soluble. The chemical structure of ATIs based on 4-ethynylphthalic anhydride endcapper is shown in Fig. 45.
