These properties have been used when going trough the different accident reports, to identify if resilience has been discussed. In addition these properties have been used to discuss if the indicators has resilient properties as described and thus could indicate loss of buffering capacity , flexibility , tolerance or loss of the ability to manage margins . [Pg.48]

Resilience Resilience such as buffering capacity , flexibility , tolerance or loss of the abihty to manage margins must be incorporated into the risk assessment. There may be a need for better methodologies to perform risk analysis incorporating the issue of resilience, to mitigate risks and improve resilience. [Pg.50]

Note that outsourcing is just one form of (short-term) capacity expansion. Very few papers in the DDM literature consider flexible capacity [75] [97], where a firm can increase its (short-term) capacity by incurring some additional cost. More research is needed to better understand under what conditions capacity flexibility is most useful and how it impacts the performance of DDM policies. [Pg.545]

Time flexibility from workforce In this approach, a firm uses flexible work hours by the workforce to vary capacity with demand. In many instances, plants do not operate continuously and are left idle during portions of the day or week. Therefore, spare plant capacity exists in the form of hours when the plant is not operational. For example, many plants do not run three shifts, so the existing workforce could work overtime during peak periods to produce more to meet demand. The overtime is varied to match the fluctuation in demand. In such settings, use of a part-time workforce can further increase capacity flexibility by enabling the firm to put more people to work during peak periods. This system allows production from the plant to match demand from customers more closely. [Pg.233]

Apart from sensing market, nanofibres are also envisaged to bridge the gap between existing supercapacitors and lithium ion batteries as electrode material (conducting nanofibres) and separators (non-conducting nanofibres) to form a new generation ultracapacitors with more power capacity flexible electronics [106, 107]. [Pg.336]

Flexible Tube. The simplicity of design and the absence of seals and valves make the flexible tube or peristaltic pump a good choice for low capacity and low pressure appHcations in the pharmaceutical industry or wherever shear-sensitive or moderately abrasive fluids are pumped. Because of the continuous flexing of the tube, the tube material of constmction presents a challenge regarding life cycle. For the same reason, pressures are kept relatively low. [Pg.296]

Flexible Impeller Pumps. Flexible impeller pumps are designed for general-use service. They can be utilized for pumping in either direction, have low pulsations, and are easy to service and maintain. These pumps are typically limited to low capacities and pressures. [Pg.296]

The polyurethane industry is dominated by the multinational isocyanate producers. Several of the principal isocyanate producers, including BASF, Bayer, Dow, ICI, and Olin, also manufacture polyols, the other significant building block for polyurethanes. Annual production capacities of the global aromatic isocyanate producers are Hsted in Table 11. Polyols, mainly used for flexible foam production, account for 65 wt % in a flexible foam formulation, 35% in rigid polyurethane foams, and even less in PUIR foams. [Pg.352]

Table 3 Hsts the U.S. producers of methylene chloride and their rated yearly capacities. Since the product mix of a typical chloromethanes process is very flexible, production may be adjusted according to the demand for methylene chloride and chloroform. The demand for methylene chloride has taken a broad downturn as a result of the 1985 NTP carcinogenicity tests (Table 4). The 1988 and 1989 demands were 227,000 t and 216,000 t, respectively, with a forecast 1993 demand of 186,000 t. The historical growth rate (1979—1988) was —2.7% pet year. In the future this should decrease even further to —3 to... Table 3 Hsts the U.S. producers of methylene chloride and their rated yearly capacities.
