Further criteria nest appetite and acceptance, disposition to cannibalism and feather pecking, feather quality, proportion of broody hens, unwanted behaviour in general (nervousness, flying in the hen run)... 

This cage-adapted material has shortcomings in terms of behaviour in larger flocks. This manifests itself in an excessive tendency for feather pecking and cannibalism, and, independent of flock size, many mislaid eggs. 

Experiments have shown that feather pecking, cannibalism and nesting behaviour can be improved by selection.

Therefore to some extent, the criticism of animal welfare in organic farming may stem from a different understanding of what welfare is. While organic farmers may believe their chickens have good welfare because they have a (relatively) free life in an environment that allows them to perform most of their natural behaviours, the conventional farmer or scientist may focus on the risk of parasite infections, predator attacks, cannibalism and the homegrown feed with low content of certain essential amino acids. From their point of view, the welfare of these animals is being compromised.

The chemical composition of the arachnid cuticle, especially the lipid layer, can be used for information transfer. These substances act as releaser pheromones and are identified by the arachnid after contact with another animal. Behavioral observations on arachnids demonstrate that chemical contact compounds are able to inhibit aggressive behavior between conspecifics (prevent cannibalism) and are used for sex recognition. Another example of this debate about cannibalism comes from the southwestern US. A recent book entitled Man Com Cannibalism and Violence in the Prehistoric American Southwest by Christy and Jacqueline Turner has stirred great controversy. The Turners examined the skeletal remains from 76 sites in the prehistoric southwest and find indications of cannibalism at more than 40. Many people refused to believe the vivid evidence that was presented, preferring instead a politically correct view of the Pueblo Indians as peaceful and ecological. In fact, a growing body of data suggests warfare and violence as rife in this region in the past.

The qualities needed in organic animal breeds are different from those that are most popular today. The argument here parallels the one on seeds and planting material in that new, well adapted chicken breeds, with for instance low incidence of cannibalism and certain food needs, do not come about very easily or quickly.
