Canned vegetables, salt

Ideally, the ratio of potassium to sodium in our diet should be about five to one. But the typical American, and for that matter Western, diet provides almost exactly the opposite The solution is obvious cut back on salt and sodium where you ll miss them least, as in canned vegetables and other processed foods and fast foods, and make a conscious effort to boost your potassium consumption. [Pg.134]

Canned vegetables and vegetable jukes that contain added salt and frozen vegetables processed with salt. [Pg.752]

Plants can also be pests that need to be controlled, particulady noxious weeds infesting food crops. Prior to 1900, inorganic compounds such as sulfuric acid, copper nitrate, sodium nitrate, ammonium sulfate, and potassium salts were used to selectively control mustards and other broadleaved weeds in cereal grains. By the early 1900s, Kainite and calcium cyanamid were also used in monocotyledenous crops, as well as iron sulfate, copper sulfate, and sodium arsenate. Prom 1915 to 1925, acid arsenical sprays, carbon bisulfate, sodium chlorate, and others were introduced for weed control use. Total or nonselective herbicides kill all vegetation, whereas selective compounds control weeds without adversely affecting the growth of the crop (see Herbicides). [Pg.141]

From the practical point of view, the principal variation of environment which is definitely under the control of the cultivator, is, of course, the alteration in the composition of the soil, which is brought about by scientific manuring, llie analysis of fruits and vegetables will give the ordinary agriculturist much information as to the necessary mineral ingredients to be added to the soil but in the case of essential oils, the conditions are entirely different. The various parts of the plant tissue are affected in different ways by the same mineral salts, and successful development of the fruit or any other given part of the plant may have little or no relationship with the quantity or quality of essential oil produced. So that it is only by actual distillations of the plant, or portion of the plant, coupled with an exhaustive examination of the essential oil, that informative results can be obtained. [Pg.3]

Monoolein will also form the cubic phase together with lecithin (e.g. dioleoyl phosphatidylcholine, see Figure 1), but above about 50% (w/w) lecithin the cubic phase is transformed into the lamellar phase (2). Moreover, water may be replaced by glycerol, completely or partly, in the cubic phase. Vegetable oils, e.g. sesame oil, can be incorporated to some extent (a few percent) in the cubic phase, and the same holds for bile salts. [Pg.250]

Nanoscale Metallics. Many of the metallization materials previously discussed, such as gold, can be developed into fine particles through either chemical reduction from a metal salt or from vaporization of the bulk metal.89 In fact, metals, such as gold, silver, palladium, and iron, can be harvested in elemental form from vegetation and grains that have been planted... [Pg.396]
