Canada samples

The levels of PBDEs have recently been determined in harbor porpoises (Phocaena phocaena from British Columbia, Canada (Ikonomou et al. 2000) and from the coasts of England and Wales (Law et al. 2000). In Canada samples are referred to as clinical evaluation packages (CEPs) a package containing a limited quantity of a pharmaceutical product sufficient to evaluate clinical response, distributed to authorised healthcare professionals free of charge, for patient treatment.

The data available are generally for the Athabasca materials, although workers at the University of Utah (Salt Lake City) have carried out an intensive program to determine the processibiUty of Utah bitumen and considerable data have become available. Bulk properties of samples from several locations (Table 3) (9) show that there is a wide range of properties. Substantial differences exist between the tar sands in Canada and those in the United States a difference often cited is that the former is water-wet and the latter, oil-wet (10). 

Canada, and Mexico (23). The National Atmospheric Deposition Program has established the nationwide sampling network of —100 stations in the United States. The sampler is shown in Fig. 14-9 with a wet collection container. The wet collection bucket is covered with a lid when it is not raining. A sensor for rain moves the lid to open the wet collector bucket and cover the dry bucket at the beginning of a rainstorm. This process is reversed when the rain stops. 

The diet of the 19 century residents of Upper Canada was determined from historical sources and was reproduced in order to carry out chemical analysis. Stable carbon isotope analysis of food and human bone demonstrates that the spacing between the food eaten and the bone collagen is around 5.6%o. The value may vary slightly from this estimate since the latter is based on a reconstructed diet and a large number of bone samples, which exhibit a small amount of variation. Nevertheless, this empirically derived result agrees well with estimates from field (Vogel 1978), and laboratory studies (reviewed in Ambrose 1993).

Rainfall samples collected in the Great Lakes area of Canada in 1976 and 1977 contained mean concentrations of 1-2 ng/L (parts per trillion) a-endosulfan and 4—5 ng/L P-endosulfan. Endosulfan was detected in spring and summer rainfall samples but not in samples collected during the fall and winter (Strachan et al. 1980). a-Endosulfan has also been detected in snowpack samples obtained from widely distributed sites in the Canadian Arctic. Endosulfan concentrations in samples collected in the spring of 1986 ranged from 0.1 to 1.34 ng/L (Gregor and Gummer 1989). 

C04-0111. The element titanium is commonly found as the ore ilmenite, F eTi03. Much of the world reserves of titanium is found in Canada. At a particular mine, a sample of earth was found to contain 15% ilmenite by mass. What mass of pure titanium metal can be isolated from 1.00 x 10 metric tons of earth, if the extraction process is 95% efficient ... 

As previously described, Eq. 6 contains two constants characteristic of the system and the sample, feo and S, which can be determined by two chromatographic mns differing only in tc. These two values allow to calculate log fe using Eq. 4. However, because there is no empirical solution, values of log few and S have to be computed by iteration. Such procedures are included in several commercially available LC software packages, such as Drylab (Rheodyne, CA, USA), Chromsword (Merck, Darmstadt, Germany), ACD/LC simulator (Advanced Chemical Development, Toronto, Canada) or Osiris (Datalys, Grenoble, Erance). This approach was comprehensively described and successfully applied for accurate log P determination of several solutes with diverse chemical structures [9, 12, 43, 50].
