Ethyl Cinnamate.—The cinnamic ester of ethyl alcohol is a natural constituent of a few essential oils, including camphor oil and storax. It is formed synthetically by condensing cinnamic acid and ethyl alcohol by dry hydrochloric acid gas. It has a soft and sweet odour, and is particularly suitable for blending in soap perfumes. It is an oil at ordinary temperatures, melting at 12°, and boiling at 271°. Its specific gravity is 1 0546, and its refractive index 1 5590. [Pg.166]

Bomeol occurs abundantly in nature as a single enantiomer or, less frequently, as the racemate. (—)-Borneol [464-45-9] occurs particularly in oils from Pinaceae species and in citronella oil. (+)-Bomeol [464-43-7] is found, for example, in camphor oil (Hon-Sho oil), in rosemary, lavender, and olibanum oils. [Pg.59]

Camphor is produced by fractional distillation and crystallization of camphor oil or, synthetically, by dehydrogenation of isoborneol (from isobornyl acetate, see p. 73) over a copper catalyst. [Pg.62]

Camphor oil is obtained by steam distillation of the wood of the camphor tree Cinnamomum camphora Sieb. (Lauraceae) growing in China, Taiwan, and Japan. The main constituent of the crude oil is camphor (ca. 50%), which can be separated by crystallization on cooling and subsequent centrifugation. Fractionation of the mother liquor gives two oils ... [Pg.180]

While camphor oil is the first distillation fraction (ca. 20% of the crude camphor oil). It is a colorless or almost colorless liquid with a cineole-like odor. [Pg.180]

Brown camphor oil is a fraction with a boiling point higher than that of camphor (ca. 20%). It is a pale yellow to brown liquid with the characteristic odor of sassafras oil. [Pg.180]

Camphor oils with a high safrole content can also be obtained by steam distillation from other Cinnamomum species (see sassafras oils). [Pg.180]
