Cable modem

When study data need to be transferred to the Study Director at regular intervals (typically after each application, sampling, and shipment), the e-mail and attachment transfer rate is critical. In isolated field sites, with poor telephone tine quality, the upload can take hours. This is also a problem when downloading software updates. Also, the upload/download time may be a problem when it ties up the only telephone tine or fax tine. If available in the area, the use of a faster form, such as cable modem or digital subscriber line (DSL), is preferable. Since telephone tine quality is a common problem, it would be best if software developers sent updates on CD-ROMs. [Pg.1052]

The Internet. According to the United Nations International Telecommunication Union (ITU), the number of Internet users across the world met the two billion mark in January 2011. Much like standard telephone service, the capacity, ease, and speed to the Internet has been greatly increased by the replacement of phone-based modem systems, cable modems, and digital subscriber line (DSL) by fiber-optics wired systems. Although fiber-optic connections directly to homes in the United States are not available in all areas, some companies use fiber-optic systems down major networking lines and then split to traditional copper wiring for houses. [Pg.745]

Nearly all corporate networks, and portions of many university networks (which have traditionally been open and unfiltered), use firewalls of varying strictness to cleanse incoming packet flows. Most consumers also have firewalls in their cable modems, DSL routers, wireless base stations, or client computers. [Pg.94]

There has been an increasing global trend in the wire and cable industry to restrict and remove the presence of lead in materials used for insulation and jacketing applications. The various standards that apply to lead in electrical applications are discussed. One of the issues is how to define the low levels of lead. Many minerals contain trace levels of lead as a chemical impurity. These minerals are used in rubber and plastics and thus the final composition is likely to contain trace amounts of lead. With modem analytical techniques, lead can be found at levels lower than five parts per million. Therefore, to satisfy increasing demands on wire and cable materials, a new series of thermoplastic vulcanisates (TPV) has been introduced that contains no added lead chemicals. These TPV materials have recently been granted a UL listing for flexible cord applications. The properties of these materials are presented and highlighted. 6 refs. [Pg.37]

The simplest of the formats used to transfer data into word processing applications is the ASCII (.ASC). ASCII is a standard set of 128 binary codes used by all computers to represent all the characters presented on the normal or shifted keyboard plus control codes, originally intended for use on teletypewriters. These code allow us to display lower case leters, capital letters, numbers, and punctuation marks, but formatting codes for underline, boldface, and italics are not included in ASCII, and are removed in converting formats. ASCII files have space-separated code and can be sent out over a modem or a serial cable to another computer and applications importing ASCII code. [Pg.177]

There are two types of modems internal and external. Internal modems are installed as expansion cards inside a computer. External modems have their own power supplies and connect to an external COM port with an RS-232 cable. There are advantages and disadvantages to each. [Pg.258]

C. A cable with both ends having a DB-25F connector is classified as a null modem cable. [Pg.267]

Some connections, such as cable or DSL, do not use a modem and as such are configured through the use of network cards and standard network clients. Configuring Internet access for DSL is very similar to configuring access on a company network. You simply install TCP/IP, configure it properly, and then skip ahead to "Connecting to the Internet." You will need information from the ISP when configuring these systems. [Pg.752]

Cellular polyethylene is particularly useful in a number of electrical applications, such as in coaxial cables (CATV, military and other) and in twin leads. The foamed material is particularly useful in modem wire-coating equipment because of the ease of handling and the economies it provides in size and weight of insulated conductors (6). [Pg.230]
