On the other hand, the western part of the old Roman Empire, perhaps due to labor shortages, saw a very significant increase in the use of both wind and water power, especially between 900 and 1300. [Pg.694]

But these byzantine discussions on mechanism are beyond the point. This book is based on experiments. It does not claim to solve all problems (e.g what is thereat origin of Bancroft s rule) but it presents them with common sense and precision. I am convinced that it will be of great help. [Pg.236]

From Hesiod to Aristotle, from Aristotle to Galileo, from Galileo to Einstein, the Universe has undergone repeated mental reform. Visionaries of infinity have replaced poets and men of God. Byzantine mosaics and West European stained glass portrayed theories of the world. Today, equations between symbols have replaced the liturgies, but the quest for unity stands. [Pg.254]
