The synthesis of poly(butyl acrylate) in the presence of cysteine was carried out using THF, ethyl alcohol, and water where the molar ratio of butyl acrylate monomer/ cysteine/azobisisobutyronitrile was 1000 30 1, respectively. The mixture was then refluxed for 6 hours at 65°C while under constant stirring. After cooling the cysteine-modified product consisted of a white precipitate dispersed within poly(butyl acrylate). The precipitate was isolated from the polymer by dissolving the poly(butyl acrylate) in THF and filtering. [Pg.58]

Another interesting three-component LIPN consists of crosslinked polyorganosiloxane (tet-raethoxysilane as crosslinker) as the first stage, swollen by butyl acrylate monomer (allyl methacrylate as crosslinker) and then polymerized to form the second component, and finally, poly(methyl methacrylate) was grafted onto the IPN core as the shell layer [Isao et al, 1992], Such kind of LIPNs are found to be a good impact modifiers in thermoplastics i.e., they are toughened by the addition of finely divided low phase. [Pg.435]

When styrene is eliminated from the monomer mix, there is an increase in conversion from 67 percent to 84 percent (D vs. C) with a corresponding decrease in the amount of unreacted VEC. Increasing the temperature from 100° to 120°C did not have a significant effect. Increasing the amount of butyl acrylate monomer relative to MMA improved the conversion (F), as did increasing the level of initiator (G). One of the better results we have been able to attain thus far is the copolymer with butyl acrylate (H), however, there is still some unreacted VEC present in the copolymer. [Pg.307]

PnBA is not commercially available in a form suitable for use as an encapsulation pottant, but the n-butyl acrylate monomer is readily available at a bulk cost of about 0.45/lb. As a result of the developmental program, a 100%-pure PnBA liquid was developed that could be cast as a conventional liquid-casting resin, and that subsequently cures to a tough, temperature-stable elastomer. Modules fabricated with the PnBA elastomer have successfully passed module engineering tests. [Pg.359]

Bifunctional polysulfones can be prepared by step-growth polymraization and end-capped using 2-bromopropionyl bromide (2). Triblocks arc thrai formed using ATRP with a CuBr/(dNbpy)2 catalyst and either styrene or i-butyl acrylate monom. ... [Pg.139]

Further work by Palermo and Kuroda extended the library of molecules to indude tertiary amine- and quaternary ammonium-fimctionalized methacrylates. For this series, cationic monomers were polymerized with methyl and butyl acrylate monomers. As with the styrene-based polymers of Gelman et al, the quaternary ammonium series was much less antimiaobial and somewhat less hemolytic than the primary and tertiary amine series. Again, titration of the polymers showed that there is partial deprotonation of the amine functionalities at neutral pH. The deprotonated moieties are more hydrophobic than the ammonium salts, and thus inaease the membrane activity of the polymers. No explanation was given, however, for the inaeased activity of the primary amine polymers over the tertiary amine polymers. [Pg.305]

Two main nitroxide families have been examined TEMPO (N1 in Figure 5.6) and derivatives (N2-N7) and SGI (NIO). With TEMPO, most of the results were related to styrene homopolymerisation and only a few articles reported the homopolymerisation of n-butyl acrylate (Georges et al, 2004) in addition to its copolymerisation with styrene. With SGI, the homo-, random and block copolymerisations were investigated for both styrene and -butyl acrylate monomers. Only in the case of styrene has the emulsion process been examined, and due to the difficulties encountered most authors turned their attention towards miniemulsion polymerisation. [Pg.124]
