Insectivora (4/6) Poorly studied but comparable to other primitive eutherians (Broom, 1915 Hofer, 1982 Stephan, 1982 Matsuzaki et al., 1993) the variety of ecotypes represented, from aquatic to burrowing, are unknown for chemoreceptive adaptations. [Pg.7]

When the development of dedicated i rared spectrometers for surface studies started some ten years ago, some of them were designed as more or less complete ellipsometers, which in principle are insensitive to the ambient gas phase molecules. Fedyk et al. detected CO adsorbed on an evaporated Cu film at 4 torr, while Golden et al. reported work at 100 torr. More recently, Burrows et used a Fourier transform spectrometer and the polarizer approach above to study the reaction-rate oscillations in the oxidation of CO on a large Pt polycrystalline foil at pressures up to one atmosphere. With this rapid FTIR spectrometer they obtained a time resolution of 0.6 s at a sensitivity of 5% of a full CO monolayer. [Pg.39]

As yet, the only work that has been reported on a single crystalline surface has been done by Hoffmann and Robbins . They used the same approach as Burrows eta/. to study the methanation reaction (CO-I-3H2- CH4 + HjO) on a Ru(001) surface. Figure 21 shows the spectra of the C—O stretch mode taken at 50 torr of a mixture of CO and Hj at temperatures up to 600 K. The decrease in peak height at SOO K indicates the buildup of a passivating carbon layer. The negative absorption around 2140 cm is due to imperfect canceling of the gas phase CO band. [Pg.39]

In order to analyze both systems, some techniques from nonlinear science are burrowed. Firstly, a phase portrait is constructed from delay coordinates, a Poincare map is also computed, FFT is exploited to derive a Power Spectrum Density (PSD) Maximum Lyapunov Exponents (MLE) are also calculated from time series. Although we cannot claim chaos, the evidence in this chapter shows the possible chaotic behavior but, mostly important, it exhibits that the oscillatory behavior is intrinsically linked to the controlled systems. The procedures are briefly described before discuss each study case. [Pg.283]

A third approach was developed by Aller (1980a, b) who studied solute fluxes in near-shore marine sediments showing seasonal variation. In this approach, the geometry of the burrow-sediment system is allowed for explicitly and transport in the sediment between the burrows is described with appropriate diffusion equations. It is assumed that the burrows are oriented normal to the sediment surface and distributed uniformly or randomly in the horizontal plane (Figure 2.11). Thereby a cylindrical zone of influence is ascribed to each burrow with a radius... [Pg.40]

A similar pattern of reactivity has been observed by Burrows and coworkers for the reaction between A -acetyllysine methyl ester (Lys) and dG. This reaction was studied in order to gain an understanding of structural aspects of DNA-protein cross-links (DPCs). These cross-links are regarded as a common lesion of oxidative damage to cells, but remain, from a chemical point, a poorly understood DNA lesion. As pointed out by Burrows, oxidation of protein-DNA complexes should occur preferentially at the primary amines since these sites have a lower oxidation potential (1.1 V vs. NHE, pH 10) than G. While protonation of the primary amine inhibits the oxidative process, transient deprotonation of a lysine residue would give rise to a lysine aminyl radical (or aminium radical cation). Using... [Pg.187]

Dermal Effects. Contact dermatitis, which results from dermal exposure to nickel, is the most prevalent effect of nickel in the general population (see Section 2.2.3.2). Several studies indicate that a single oral dose of nickel given as nickel sulfate can result in a flare-up in the dermatitis in nickel-sensitive individuals (Burrows et al. 1981 Christensen and Moller 1975 Cronin et al. 1980 ... [Pg.86]
