Bupleurum from roots

Isol. from above ground parts of Dahlia merckii, from roots of Bupleurum gibraltaricum, from Zoegea baldshuanica and above ground parts of Serrulata gmelini. Shows pesticidal and herbicidal props. Needles or leaflets (pet. ether). Mp 76-77° (65-71°). 

A few examples of pure arabinans with effect in the complement system have been isolated from, for example, the fruits of Ziziphus jujuba (a-2,5-arabinofuranan) and from the roots of Bupleurum falcatum (Q -3,5-arabino-furanan-Q -l,4-glucan complex) [12,13].

To the best of our knowledge, phenolic glycosides have not been reported previously in the genus Bupleurum. However, glycoside 14 was obtained from the butanolic extract of the roots of B. rigidum.

No adverse effects were observed in rats 14 days after intranasal administration of bupleurum essential oil made from 10 g of bupleurum root (50 times the human clinical dose) (Xie et al. 2006).

Chemically, some triterpene saponin and sapogenin compounds, Saikosaponin A. Bl, B2, B3, B4, C, D, E and F, and saikogenin A, B, C, D, E and F, were isolated from the root of Bupleurum species. In addition to the saponins, a pharmacologically active essential oil was obtained from B. chinense [21, 23].
