Bulk unloader

Bulk unloading facilities usually must be provided at the treatment plant. Rail cars are constructed for top unloading and therefore require an air supply system and flexible connectors to pneumatically displace the alum from the car. U.S. Department of Transportation regulations concerning chemical tank car unloading should be observed. Tank truck unloading is usually accomplished by gravity or by a truck mounted pump.

A heated dispensing system is used here for illustration, however, many of the system variables are equally relevant for cold dispense systems. In a typical heated sealer application (Fig. 1), bulk unloader A would be the on-line unloader. The on-line unloader is the unit currently heating the material to application temperature and pumping the material to the changeover manifold at the required temperature, pressure, and flow. Bulk unloader B is the standby unloader and will usually be at a setback (reduced) temperature to minimize the amount of time the sealer is at application temperature while ensuring that minimum time is allotted to come up to full application temperature when commanded from the system controller.

When bulk unloader A reaches a predetermined level known as Lx>w drum, a limit switch sends a signal to the system controller, which in turn increases the set-point temperature of bulk unloader B from the setback temperature to the required application temperature (usually the same as A). 

When bulk unloader A reaches empty drum, another limit switch sends a signal to the system controller indicating that bulk unloader A is out of material. The system controller automatically then switches bulk unloader B to on-line status and signals manufacturing personnel that a changeover has occurred and that a new drum of material is required. Resilience of textile fabrics when compressed in the bent state is related to wrinkle resistance and retention of shape, drape, and hand. Resilience is an important parameter for evaluating blankets, wearing apparel in which warmth is a factor, pUe fabrics including carpets, and bulk fiber utilization in mattresses, cushions, etc. The general method for determining compressional resilience is to compress and unload the material cycHcahy, creating a plot of compressive force versus fabric thickness. 

Conveyor installations maybe permanent or a combination of permanent and portable. The latter kind is often mounted on a bulk-deliveiy vehicle, which permits fast unloading into the customers silo by the carrier without effort or equipment from the customer. Controls range from simple motor starters and hand-connected hoses to sophisticated, microprocessor-elec tropueumatic control systems. 

Because of the railroad-car shortage that has persisted for many years, boxcars are often used for bulk materials. Lined with suitable materials to prevent contamination and with special bulkheads at each door, these cars are acceptable substitutes for covered hopper cars even though unloading is more difficult. Vacuum conveying wands are used to pick up the material, as are front-end-loader-type vehicles. 

Controls for the safe transfer of ehemieals between ship and shore will vary in detail.
