Bristol Laboratories

In the United States, the manufacturers of fermentation-derived tetracyclines (1), (2), and (3) are the Ledede Laboratories, a division of American Cyanamid Co., Charles Pfizer Inc., Bristol Laboratories, and RacheUe Laboratories. There are also several manufacturers abroad. Tetracycline is now sold genetically by many companies. Pfizer s doxycycline (6) and Ledede s minocycline (7), both semisynthetic tetracyclines, are the only members of the group that have increasing sales. Table 1 fists the commercial tetracyclines and the corresponding trade names.

Fusion of a cyclohexane or cyclopentane ring to the C-ring of morphinans was reported by the Bristol Laboratories Group005 in 1976, and is discussed on pp. 133 and 462. 

Belleau and a Bristol Laboratories group developed a novel morphinan synthesis which leads to 14-hydroxy derivatives.(62) The procedure rests upon rearrangement of the spirane 13 and may be adapted to provide either 14-/3-or 14-a-hydroxy (iso) diastereoisomers (see 13 and p. 110). Following the hearings, in 1972 GAO approached the Pharmaceutical Manufacturers Association (PMA) about doing a comprehensive study on the industry, including production process, efficiency, costs, and profits. PMA-member companies rejected GAO s request because the confidentiality of their cost and other data could not be protected.8 GAO revised its plan and proposed a Phase I study that would examine the characteristics and methods of the industry. Six companies voluntarily cooperated with this initial phase SmithKline Corporation, Bristol Laboratories, division of Bristol-Myers Company, Abbott Laboratories, Eli Lilly Company, Merck Company, Inc., and Hoffman La Roche.
