Collaboration skills

Seeing a chemical agent proceed through the maze required for FDA approval as a new drug entity makes one truly appreciative of the extensive expertise required at every stage. It is impossible to credit all of those involved in this 12-year quest. One thing is certain. Without collaborative skills at every level, a strong perseverance to continue...

The skillful and dedicated collaborative efforts of members of the ANL Chemistry Division Radiation Chemistry Group, S. Gordon, W. Mulac and K. H. Schmidt have provided not only the technical expertise but also continuing intellectual stimulation which has made the pulse radiolysis studies possible. 

Coordination may be established, where appropriate, between the DRA and the country s educational institutions, to provide the number and types of pharmaceutical competency which are needed. The aim is not merely to increase the number of professionals, but also to develop skills through short training courses. A coherent, module-based educational package may be developed by collaboration between countries. The individual modules may be housed in institutions with the relevant expertise. The DRA may then choose where to send its personnel for the training they most require. 

Finally, Haber knew how to blend the talents of skilled technicians, industrialists, and scientists from different disciplines. His English collaborator, Robert Le Rossignol, would develop the seals needed to maintain high pressures in an experimental chamber. A highly skilled mechanic, Friedrich Kirchenbauer, would build precision equipment needed for the reaction. Haber later thanked Le Rossignol and Kirchenbauer in his Nobel Prize speech and shared patents with Le Rossignol and prize money with both men.
