In the United States, the manufacturers of fermentation-derived tetracyclines (1), (2), and (3) are the Ledede Laboratories, a division of American Cyanamid Co., Charles Pfizer Inc., Bristol Laboratories, and RacheUe Laboratories. There are also several manufacturers abroad. Tetracycline is now sold genetically by many companies. Pfizer s doxycycline (6) and Ledede s minocycline (7), both semisynthetic tetracyclines, are the only members of the group that have increasing sales. Table 1 fists the commercial tetracyclines and the corresponding trade names. 

Cousins Charles Pfizer and Charles Erhardt found Pfizer in Brooklyn, New York. The company begins with several successful drugs and popular food additives. Some 150 years later, it will have become the world s largest pharmaceutical company. 

Charles Pfizer, a German chemist who founded the pharmaceutical company Pfizer in 1849. After immigrating to the United States, he and Charles Erhardt borrowed 2,500 to establish their new chemical business in Brooklyn, New York. Their first success was to make a palatable form of the drug santonin used to treat parasitic worms, a common problem in the 1800s. Over the next century and a half, the company grew into the world s largest pharmaceutical maker.

In the United States the marriages between Pfizer and Coty, Colgate and U.S. Vitamin, Eli Lilly and Elizabeth Arden, Squibb and Charles of the Ritz, Avon and Mallinckrodt, Revlon and Armour Pharmaceuticals all ended in divorce. There was, of course, Bristol-Myers successful venture with Clairol, and American Cyanamid with its Shulton subsidiary. But these exceptions only confirm the general rule of failure.
