When he was a boy, John Dalton bought his mother a pair of bright red stockings. His mother was dismayed. She was a staunch Quaker, and Quaker women preferred to dress drably and wear neutral colors. Dalton knew this, but the stockings appeared drab to him. He later diagnosed his problem. He was color-blind. 

Some precautions are based on the dietary supplement s side effect profile. St. John s wort may induce photosensitivity therefore, fair-skinned persons should be cautioned about exposure to bright sunlight while taking the herb. 

This book has been written in an attempt to provide students with the mathematical basis of chemistry and physics. Many of the subjects chosen are those that I wish that I had known when I was a student It was just at that time that the no-mans-land between these two domains - chemistry and physics - was established by the Harvard School , certainly attributable to E. Bright Wilson, Jr., J. H. van Vleck and the others of that epoch. I was most honored to have been a product, at least indirectly, of that group as a graduate student of J. C. Decius. Later, in my post-doc years. I profited from the Harvard-MIT seminars. During this experience I listened to, and tried to understand, the presentations by those most prestigious persons, who played a very important role in my development in chemistry and physics. The essential books at that time were most certainly the many publications by John C. Slater and the Bible on mathematical methods, by Margeneau and Murphy. They were my inspirations.

Bove, 1998, Walter et al., 2000). People using St. John s wort should take extra care if they go out in the sunshine and avoid sun bathing. This can be difficult for children and adolescents. Furthermore, concerns have been raised that St. John s wort and bright light may lead to the development of cataracts (Schey et ah, 2000). In this context, the combination of St. John s wort and light-box therapy in patients with seasonal affective disorder could be hazardous. 

Astronomers recognize two different types of supernovae, Type I and Type II. Bright Type I supernovae occur anywhere in a spiral galaxy, but dimmer Type II supernovae are seen only in the spiral arms. Other distinguishing characteristics are described in John Gribbin s book Stardust (New Haven, Connecticut Yale University Press, 2000). 

In 1978, Marcia Moore and Howard Alltounian published a book about Ketamine, Journeys into the Bright World. Another positive account appears in John Lilly s novel-autobiography The Scientist, where this compound is referred to as K. Some users have been highly enthusiastic a few have been disappointed. Here s a response from someone who saw his Ketamine experience as quite distinct from those induced by other psychedelics ... 

When I saw Professor Dickinson s car, I exclaimed to John, Look at that car Have you ever seen such a beautiful car It was 1938 Buick convertible coupe with a rumble seat, black canvas cover, solid bright red color, white sidewall tires, and a classic radiator grill. Dickinson put the box with the S-10 in the rumble seat and closed the lid. As he drove off, I said to myself, I hope he ll let me ride in it sometimes. ... 

The quality of synchrotron beams is usually characterized by brilliance, which is defined as brightness divided by the product of the source area (in mm ) and a fraction of a useful photon energy, i.e. bandwidth [see, for example, J. Als-Nielsen and D. McMorrow, Elements of modern x-ray physics, John Wiley Sons, New York (2001)]. 

Along with depression, hypericum has been studied in SAD. There have been two studies in which participants received 300 mg St. John s wort three times daily with or without bright-light therapy either for 4 or 8 weeks. In...

Hypericum is a perennial aromatic shrub with bright yellow flowers that bloom from June to September (Wincor and Gutierrez, 1997). The flowers are said to be at their brightest and most abundant around June 24th, the day traditionally believed to be the birthday of John the Baptist. The plant is native to Europe and can also be found in the United States and Canada. It grows in the dry ground of fields, roadsides, and woods. 

Although both are closely linked in our minds and by our own experience, the petroleum industry predated the automobile industry by half a century. The first oil well, drilled in Titusville, Pennsylvania, by Edwin Drake in 1859, provided rock oil, as it was then called, on a large scale. This was quickly followed by the development of a process to refine it so as to produce kerosene. As a fuel for oil lamps, kerosene burned with a bright, clean flame and soon replaced the more expensive whale oil then in use. Other oil fields were discovered, and uses for other petroleum products were found—illuminating gas lit city streets, and oil heated homes and powered locomotives. There were oil refineries long before there were automobiles. By the time the first Model T rolled off Henry Ford s assembly line in 1908, John D. Rockefeller s Standard Oil holdings had already made him one of the half-dozen wealthiest people in the world. 

Saint-John s-wort is one example of a natural herbal remedy for depression that has recently gained in popularity and prevalence across the United States. In Europe, it is reportedly outselling the prescription medication Prozac. Saint-John s-wort (Hypericum perforatum) is a lush green herb with bright yellow flowers that has traditionally been used to heal wounds and as a tea to soothe nerves and relieve melancholy. The natural antidepressant effect that results enhances the neurochemical serotonin, norepinephrine, and dopamine with few side effects (Lemonick, 1997).
