On February 21, 1809, Hatchett became a member of the famous Literary Club which had been founded in 1764 by Dr. Samuel Johnson and Sir Joshua Reynolds (51). As treasurer of the club, Hatchett prepared a brief historical account of it, which appears in Boswell s Life of Johnson (25). The club also included, among others, Edmund Burke, Oliver Goldsmith, David Garrick, Edward Gibbon, Adam Smith, Sir Joseph Banks, Sir Charles Blagden, Sir Humphry Davy, Dr. W. H. Wollaston, Sir Walter Scott, Sir Thomas Lawrence, and Dr. Thomas Young. [Pg.384]

Female volatile pheromone (-)-periplanone-B The identification of the sex pheromone of P. americana has not been straightforward. A brief historical account provides a good case study of the possible problems associated with pheromone identification (Stinson, 1979 Schal and Smith, 1990). Roth and Willis (1952) discovered that females release an odorant, minute amounts of which stimulate male courtship. This pheromone could be extracted with ether from filter paper taken from containers that housed virgin females. Wharton et al. [Pg.189]

The flux expression in Equation (4.16) displays the canonical Michaelis-Menten hyperbolic dependence on substrate concentration [S], We have shown that this dependence can be obtained from either rapid pre-equilibration or the assumption that [S] [E]. The rapid pre-equilibrium approximation was the basis of Michaelis and Menten s original 1913 work on the subject [140], In 1925 Briggs and Haldane [24] introduced the quasi-steady approximation, which follows from [S] 2> [E], (In his text on enzyme kinetics [35], Cornish-Bowden provides a brief historical account of the development of this famous equation, including outlines of the contributions of Henri [80, 81], Van Slyke and Cullen [203], and others, as well as those of Michaelis and Menten, and Briggs and Haldane.)... [Pg.78]

In this section we present a brief historical account of LICS without going into too many details, as our main concern is aspects of quantum interferences. LICS was initially suggested by Heller and Popov [4] and by Armstrong et al. [27], who termed the effect "pseudo-autoionization." Early theoretical investigations on LICS focused on coherent population trapping [28, 29], multichannel effects [30-33], and Raman-type transitions [2, 34 0]. [Pg.107]

Oxidation-reduction is a notion that has been developed over the course of centuries, as outlined in the brief historic account given above. In the first notion introduced by... [Pg.7]

ABSTRACT. The new field of the electrochemistry of electronically conducting polymers is reviewed. A brief historical account traces the beginning of organic electrodes to Kallmann and Pope, who, in 1960, observed charge injection and conductance in anthracene electrodes. [Pg.1]

We start the presentation of Chemical Engineering Thermodynamics by taking a Glimpse at the Subject and proceed with a discussion of its Laws, followed by a brief Historical Account of its development. (A Nation cannot exist without a sense of its history, why should a field of Science and Technology )... [Pg.723]

As a matter of fact, the two approaches used to build dendritic structures can be viewed as a means to generate species with n X/terminal functions from a precursor exhibiting/similar groups by condensation techniques. This feature has thus been used to construct branched polymers with perfectly defined structure. After a brief historical account, this paper will focus on the convergent approach to dendrimer synthesis and review the different dendritic structures that have been obtained via this method. [Pg.243]
