Theories abound. The British historian Edward Gibbon (1737-94), whose multivolume work. The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire, published in 1776-88, blamed the collapse on overindulgence, lapses in military strength, and a weakening of the people s respect for their leaders following the Roman government s adoption of Christianity in the empire s later stages. [Pg.187]

On February 21, 1809, Hatchett became a member of the famous Literary Club which had been founded in 1764 by Dr. Samuel Johnson and Sir Joshua Reynolds (51).
