In addition to these various characteristics, patient-specific factors can affect delivery of aerosolized antimicrobials to the lung. Patient breathing technique and several physiologic variables affect ultimate deposition, including age, breathing pattern, ventilation volumes, and the presence of disease [9]. 

Needle electrodes were placed in intercostal muscles in 10 subjects who received 70-150 pg of sarin by the single-breath technique of vapor administration (MOD13). Although eight noted chest tightness, none had changes in whole blood cholinesterase, and there were no abnormalities in the electrical pattern from the muscles. It was concluded that muscular abnormalities did not contribute to the sensation of dyspnea. 

Using a single-breath technique of sarin administration, 63 subjects inhaled doses of 0.6-3.3 pg kg-1. Increase in airway resistance was dose-dependent, but it correlated better with the concentration of agent (which varied from 5 to 40 mg m-3) than with Ct. At the highest dose,... 

Also with a single-breath technique, 25 subjects inhaled 0.5-5.0 pg kg-1 of sarin and had fewer symptoms than usually seen after these amounts (MOD20). There was a correlation between the amount retained and erythrocyte cholinesterase inhibition, with a maximal inhibition of 27% at 5.0 pg kg-1. The half-time for inhibition of the enzyme was about 90 s, and inhibition was complete in about 10 min. 

The key to all breathing practice is abdominal breathing, in which the breath is drawn deep into the abdomen, which moves freely. I recommend practicing this vital technique for five to ten minutes a day, until it becomes automatic. Then you can draw on the Calming Breath Technique and the Energizing Breath Technique as needed. 

You can use the following Calming Breath Technique whenever you get anxious or if you have difficulty sleeping. 1 also recommend practicing it for ten minutes each day no matter what, especially if you think your depression is related to low serotonin levels. 

Cindy used the Energizing Breath Technique described in Chapter 6 to give herself a boost each morning and early afternoon, right after her session with the light box, which she used to combat SAD. She also relied on this useful technique whenever she felt depressed or sluggish or when she had difficulty concentrating. 

Try a few minutes of the Energizing Breath Technique or some right nostril breathing.
