In the decade since I published the first edition of this book,1 the field of geochemical reaction modeling has expanded sharply in its breadth of application, especially in the environmental sciences. The descriptions of microbial activity, surface chemistry, and redox chemistry within reaction models have become more robust and rigorous. Increasingly, modelers are called upon to analyze not just geochemical but biogeochemical reaction processes. 

In this lofty position, he has for nearly fifty years followed and often guided the research efforts of so many workers that his label, "everything to everybody" takes on real meaning. With his breadth of contacts and genuine interest in people and his ability to communicate with interested audiences of almost any level of knowledge, he has been and remains one of the most liked, visible, important leaders in science. 

It is a treat to listen to Dinesh. His common sense approach to science and willingness to look at new ideas constantly has made his laboratory the congregating place for world-class scientists. Dinesh s depth and breadth of outstanding scholarly and high-quality contributions are truly remarkable. We honor ourselves as we dedicate this volume of nine essays, written by experts, to this unusual individual who has shown us the way to academic enlightenment. 

In summary, the science of free radical chemistry showed remarkable advancement during the Century following Gomberg s seminal contribution in 1900. The current vigor of the field shows that the impetus provided by the pioneers mentioned in this brief survey is by no means spent. The breadth of the field indicates that any future comprehensive survey will be a major undertaking. However, there are recent concise descriptions of the field that are highly recommended. ... 

Volume 2A consists of Chapters 6 through 9 and covers the fundamentals of electrodics. Chapters 10 through 15, which make up Vol. 2B, discuss electrodics in chemistry, engineering, biology, and environmental science. It would be a misapprehension to dunk of these chapters as being applied electrochemistry, for the considerations are not at all technological. The material presented serves to illustrate the breadth of fields that depend upon the properties of wet surfaces. 

Rideal was a great scientific leader who through his own activities and those of his numerous successful pupils has exerted a profound influence on world science. His father undoubtedly influenced the breadth of his interests and his enthusiasm for applied sciences, and W. B. Hardy helped to focus his research interests and to shape his scientific attitudes. 

Given the breadth of forensic science and the varying demands on the criminalistics laboratory, it is not surprising that there is a wide variation in the quality and capability of different laboratories. Limited analyses may be possible at the local level, whereas at regional (e.g., county, state) and federal laboratories sophisticated analytical capabilities may exist.
