Bowen operation

The Bowen chart is a plot of enthalpy (abscissa) against humidity (ordinate). It is convenient to be able to read enthalpy directly, especially for near-adiabatic convective drying where the operating line approximately follows a line of constant enthalpy. However, it is very difficult to read accurately because the key information is compressed in a narrow band near the saturation line. Bowen and Doneva measured the mean pore dicimeters of five Desal G-series thin film membranes (Osmonics, Vista, USA) with molecular weight cutoff values of 1000 2500 3500 8000 and 10 000 [38]. The MWCO values of these membranes were determined by the manufacturer from the data obtained by UF experiments that were carried out using 1.0 gL polyethylene glycol (PEG) solutions at an operating pressure of 827 kPa and at 25 °C. Piezoceramic materials are chemically inert and physically strong. In fibre form, they have anisotropic structures. Usually, ceramic fibres are produced by the spinning of an organic or mineral precursor fibre, followed by heat treatment and pyrolysis (Hearle, 2001). Piezoceramic fibres comprising lead zirconate/lead titanate exhibit better sensitivity in terms of piezoelectric activity and elevated operating temperatures (Swallow et al., 2008). PZT fibres can be manufactured by various processes, such as sol-gel, viscous suspension spinning, extrusion and viscous plastic processing, some of which are already commercially available (Strock et al., 1999 Meyer et al., 1998 French and Cass, 1998 Meister et al., 2003 Bowen et al., 2006).
