Goodman visited the Library of Congress and other archives in his persistent search. He waded through 100 years of The Journal of the American Medical Association, as well as The Boston Medical and Surgical Journal (continued as The New England Journal of Medicine), Lancet and The British Medical Journal. 

In 1900, James R. L. Daly, writing in the Boston Medical and Surgical Journal, declared that, It [heroin] possesses many advantages over morphine.. .. It is not hypnotic and there is no danger of acquiring the habit. ... 

In 1857, the same year that Ludlow s book appeared on the booksellers shelves, a physician named John Bell noted in the Boston Medical and Surgical Journal that "the various periodicals of this country have abounded, during the last few years, with accounts of hashisch every experimenter giving the history of the effect it has had upon himself."...

Adams was not the only observer to suggest caution in trying to predict the solvency of particular water supplies. Even proponents of the doctrine of protective power published articles encouraging doctors to be sensitive to the possibility of water-related lead poisoning among individuals who drew their water from supplies pronounced safe by prominent chemists. For example, in 1860, James R. Nichols published an article in the Boston Medical and Surgical Journal arguing that water supplies in Massachusetts were usually safe because they contained...
